Joe Filardi

To say Collins is not a D1 QB is just wrong. Is he playing well no. But can he run and throw at that level yes.

Has the game slowed down enough for him to be effective 75% of the plays, not yet.

Listened to the college drive today and the were discussing QB nationally and bring them to the SR bowl. They said like 3 QBs are playing at a level good enough to be in the NFL . the rest all have a ton of learning to do.

Filardi to me seemed like he was seeing the field fairly well. He rushed some throws and held on a few times too long. Will he be better 2-3 weeks later, perhaps. Will we have a better game plan of things he can do? Perhaps. We could play better but ND is also better so it might not show too well.

Of course it was Belichick’s fault. Didn’t you read the post from Ithaca Barrel?
The Pats went 11-5 that year.

head coach takes the heat, that's the job, pretty straight forward really. Were you not giving Fran credit for last year at 10-3? Or was that not his doing? It was as is this. Goes with the territory.

Was there really any “heat”?

In the end, you're right. It's the head coach's fault whether it is or not. I think that's what you are trying to say. It does go with the territory. I just don't want to hear " He didn't have a backup ready" or " They didn't have a 2nd type of offense to play to the strength of the backup." Injuries derail seasons constantly everywhere no matter who the coach is. Brian Dabol, I believe, had the Giants on the upswing and got fired. Injuries completely derailed their momentum and poof! He's gone.

This is basically like when a relief pitcher is just getting shelled but the manager doesn't want to blow the rest of the bullpen for the series so you just hope he can luck into a few outs.
Well, you could have used the example of when they put a position player in to pitch the top of 9th inning to save bullpen during the blowout (edited). Only instead of doing it with a position player, you use the bullpen catcher. And, instead of the 9th inning, we did it at the start of a game on national TV. And you do it on a short week.

No matter how much you like Fran, this year has been a debacle. During the first bye week, this staff should have radically reworked the offense to something with screen passes, QB mobility, trick plays, etc. Anything to work better with Rickie's limited abilities and our skilled WRs. Instead, it was just more of the same for two more weeks. And then just punt the whole thing, bypass QB3-5, and go with Filardi.

Miami's WR, Malachi Toney, is 2 for 3 on passes. So is Carney. Is he a true freshman WR with as many passes as our QB#3 in a year where QB#1 went down Game 4 and QB#2 is one of the worst QBs in FBS.

Forget the redshirt... give him the start against UNC. If it goes terribly, then stick with redshirt. If it goes well, then talk about saving the redshirt and going down to QB#4.

I'll start with, I didn't watch the Fran Brown interview, cuz I didn't have time, and it's way more
fun to be an uninformed complainer. That said...

My issue with not using Belin is, ostensibly he was brought in as a QB, who had won the NYS
player of the year, and he was, you know, a scholarship football player, not someone at SU
primarily to play another sport. I'd think he might've had a bit more potential in the QB room
than Filardi did. And once Angeli was done, that the coaches would've been trying anything to
make the team work, obviously going Collins, Carney (who I wished had worked out better),
then Williams (wondered what happened), and so forth. I don't get jumping to Filardi. I just
don't.

Also, I don't think the coaches are really putting the effort into play calling that helps the QBs, as
the offense hasn't had a 100 yard rusher all year, and I'm not sure the OL does the job blocking,
despite some serious size upfront. They should be better. The schedule doesn't help, but they
should be more competitive than they are. I don't see that improving this week, regardless of
who you put out there.

Kev

agree completely. would like Coach Fran to explain if Filardi beat out the other guys that were on the depth chart, and if so great. just say so. and yes, our OC needs to adapt to the skills of whoever is playing QB.

Sure he can throw. The issue is he can’t throw to the right guys, or to the guys at all .

Your example is way funnier.

Why is it the coaches fault? A walk-on true freshman who is forced into action because of an injury to #1 and an ineffective #2. That's the coaches' fault that this isn't Peyton Manning?

Correct. Joe Filardi didn't show up to football practice, proclaim himself to be on the team and then put himself out to start that game.

4/18, 39 yards. 7 rushes for 8 yards.

Our starting QB got hurt. Does that mean we shouldn't have a functioning QB after that?

It is more difficult, when they are freshmen and I get and agree with your point!

Yeah. I mean, the kid is a true frosh walk on that is here for lacrosse.

I'm not saying he shouldn't have a roster spot on the team. I'm saying he was not ready, nor capable, nor should he ever have stepped foot onto that field.

He can get seriously hurt and he's here for lacrosse.

Exactly. I think we all expected a dropoff from Angeli and that the season wouldn't be quite what we hoped, or at least thought we had the potential of. But to not even have someone who can keep us remotely competitive offensively is a problem.

This year we have limited and lousy options; one frosh promised a red shirt and the other a lacrosse player.

Daboll couldn't close out games. That's on him.

Fran actually is really really good at that.

Giants actually threw a competent back up QB out there.

(not to get too into the weeds)

I believe that the plan going in to the season was for Carney to redshirt.

I believe that given Angeli's season ending injury that Carney would have been willing to forego the redshirt if needed.

I believe that the staff both a) stuck with Collins for too long, choosing to essentially bury the season before getting serious about an alternative and b) deployed Carney in such a haphazard manner that they made it clear to him that burning his redshirt would have been fruitless, and the window on him being agreeable to not redshirting closed.

I believe the staff screwed up and the need to preserve Carney's redshirt is convenient cover.

And to be clear, I love having Fran and Nixon. This isn't me trying to fabricate reasons to bag on those guys. This is me just reading the situation and acknowledging that mistakes happen, and there's enough weirdness around this situation to believe that Carney's handling has been a mistake.

I think this point is undeniable and, unfortunately, an embarrassment. To a lesser degree, but nevertheless important to acknowledge, the defense also shares ownership in this fiasco of a season.

I don't think it's unreasonable to attribute at least some of this to the learning curve on new HC. What matters most now is not finger pointing, but how it is addressed going forward.

I suspect (maybe hope is a better word at this point) that there will be significant changes to the staff and the roster, despite whatever FB says publicly in the interim.

Carney has said they talked that if he started the UNC game and it went well, they probably would have canceled the redshirt.
But Fran decided to go with Joe.
