Joe Filardi

When will you stop being such a sheeithead with this dude. Freshman walk on struggles when thrown to the wolves. Shocker! Stop acting like he banged your girl

There is a reason why he was a freshman walk on QB. And no it isn't because he also plays Lax.

And there is a reason he played too. This dude chirps him like he should have refused to step up when his number was called. This ain’t the ND game thread. It’s the freaking offseason. It’s far from his only comment.

Seriously, does anyone remember how bad Rony Seikaly looked as a freshman? He did not seem like a guy destined for the NBA. McNabb did not play as a true freshman. Nassib played about as much as Carney as a redshirt freshman, just spread out over more games. Give the kid a break on the over-arching analysis. The adults in the room failed him more than he failed anyone...

Maybe because Filardi replaced Collins, who he thought should replace Angeli and "everyone wanted to see fail"?

i think people are forgetting he’s a walk-on. He’s not supposed to be “the long term answer.”

The fact that he started games is a more of a reflection on Carney and Collins (Williams definitely was and I believe Bellin was also hurt for that stretch, so they get an incomplete) than the kid who was supposed to be QB5/6.

They all had physical attributes that cannot be taught. Is Filardi going to grow another 2-3 inches, add 25 more pounds, while also increasing his arm strength?

Edit
Not to go on a tangent but was Rony really that bad? That is like 2 years before my SU BBall fandom. He was All Big East Freshman team. That said, the conference was smaller then and freshmen didn't play as much either. At the same time, he was 10th in rebounds and 4th in blocks in the Big East.

We literally flushed the season down the toilet playing this dude. He shouldn't have been on the team.

"Acting like he banged my girl" is a weird comment for an adult to make to another adult.

You are either super young or so old you’re losing it. McNabbstarted as a freshman and led the BE incompletion % and tds thrown. Seikaly started every game as a freshman, averaging 8 pt, 6.5 rebounds, 1.9 blocks and was on the BE all freshman team.

No, he was not THAT bad. But he was one of many Centers that looked like they would be a shot blocker and dunker only... but turned into a good all-around player. A lot of growth within that first year too.

As for his (edit: Filardi) height and arm strength, I would imagine that could change. His weight obviously could. Not every player does the Andre Hawkins and goes from 6'8" as a freshman center to a 6'5 senior power forward...some actually keep growing.

Definitely not super young. McNabb started as a REDSHIRT freshman. He got to spend his true freshman year learning, practicing, getting stronger, etc. Filardi was scout team for who knows how many weeks, given one week of practice PT, and got a start.

Seikaly started every game but looked very raw. I was at at least two of his first five games. He was very good at blocking shots and rebounding, but he also had Wendell Alexis to help on boards. He had very occasional flashes of scoring., but he also had Pearl feeding him for dunks, and Wendell Alexis and Raf Addison (and Pearl) giving him space. Seikaly as a FR was frequently in frustrating foul trouble... in fact, he fouled out 8 times and average nearly 4 fouls per game all year. In contrast, as a junior, he fouled out only once, averaging exactly 3 fouls a game, twice as many points, and just as many rebounds/blocks. It really seemed to click at the end of Year 2, during our FF run. He scored 20+ points in the first four games. Year 3 he took off.

I don't gte the Rony remark either. He was okay as a frosh

He was the worst QB to start a game in my lifetime and I’m 46.

We punted on the season with him.

He has no capability to be out there and should have never been out in the situation to begin with.

It’s a massive indictment against Fran. Cannot ever happen again.

Well there is a reason he can't play both sports, it's because he's terrible at football.
Easy to say with his performance this year.
Sadly the kid was rushed into starter this year when I'm sure the plan was to develop.
Maybe he never plays another down again but could still be a good player to have on the team even with the terrible year one.

You’re right on McNabb. I guess I’m the one losing it. I just remember him being a freshman. I was at almost every home game of his career. And Seikaly wasn’t being asked to score on that team. He was there to rebound and provide defense. He was raw certainly but far more effective at his game than Filardi at his.

Yep the QB room was a mess. I get that they whiffed on Collins and got a good one in Angeli but can’t ever go into a season with a QB depth chart like last year.

And it also helped Rony to have DC playing beside him, for 2 years. With those 2 inside no one was getting easy shots.

I was being rude and I apologize.

I just feel like you are putting way too much focus on Filardi and not the staff that put him in this situation. I agree that having him in at qb was a major part of why the season sucked, but the dudes who put the qb room together are to blame and deserve the most grief.

He never should have played, that is on the coaches. If he ever plays another snap for this team the coaching staff should be fired. If he wants to be a scout team guy then sure, stick around.

But at the end of the day he'd be better off to go play lax full time. That's all.

I have filed the first and third paragraphs here in the hyperbole file. Say what you will, but the kid answered the call when asked.

Not sure I would use the words massive indictment, but yes Fran erred with the QB room. Let’s see if he learned from it. As you point out, it should not happen again.

I give the kid a lot of credit, he wasn’t good but he battled and did his best. Should he have played probably not, but many on this board were calling for a change, any change after Collins. I think there is more to the QB story that we aren’t hearing in terms of the options we actually had. Time to move on from last season and see what happens in the portal.

I respect your opinion. I honestly haven't seen enough of a sample size to make any legit thought on his abilities. I have no illusions that he is the next Tom Brady. Could he develop into a solid depth piece and give the qb room some stability? I do find it hard to agree that he is terrible at football.
Idk, how many QBs start out 31-65 and 3 picks and do anything other than decide football isn’t for them

The guys you mentioned had the physicality and the physical skills to ultimately become what they became, this kid doesn’t have any of that re football
