Joe girard

I noticed Boeheim emphasized they scored enough to win which takes the spotlight off how badly Buddy has played given how many minutes he plays...always somebody else

Indeed. JB more than once in his post game presser stated how we scored enough to win, but that ultimately (this time vs. his usual "just gotta make more shots" utterances) it was the lack of rebounding that did us in. And, went on to criticize QG and Sidibe for not rebounding better. Okay, that's fair, but why not suggest that Buddy at 6'6" can help/be better there too. Especially, if he's struggling with his shooting, and D at the top of the zone, crash the boards for Pete's sake! Help out somewhere! I see Cole Anthony at 6'1" going after it getting a lot of boards as well as other small(er) guys like VT's 6'1" Radford, etc. We all can recall BC's 6'2" at best Bowen getting after it for his duration there too. Rebounding is not really about size as much as mindset, grit and a continuous conscious effort to get after it.

No, it puts it on the defense which didn't get the job done on the floor or boards.

He’s going to be good. If we get better players to surround him with, he’s going to be even better.

Dior will start. Dior would start tomorrow if he were on the team. Joe is a good PG but hes a natural 2.
I know it won't be typical for the front of the zone. But if everything works out and Dior arrives as advertised... it is going to be really tough to keep either one of them on the bench. I'm already dreaming of the epic battles JG and Dior will have in practice. Hopefully they will bring out the best in each other

Back to this year, it is hard to hate on JG at all. When Eli went down, it was JG who stepped up. It takes an incredible amount of grit and maturity to take charge there. He is not without flaws. Needs to work on discipline and defense. But his confidence, clutch play, and ability to both score/distribute is amazing fora freshman. I think he will go down as a legend here

If the standard we are applying to Joe is perfection, he comes up short, as does everyone else on the team. Hughes makes mistakes, too. That missed lay-up at 1:15 meant as much as the block on Girard 12 seconds later.

If he's a three year starter going into 2022, he'll stay at the point. Both guards can share duties and senior Joe and freshman Dior will find a way to work together.

Dior Johnson is the starting PG from day one if he makes it to campus. JGIII can start beside him.

He is a great player I hope we can get more of in the future. He is going to be a really good college player that we'll get to see develop for 4 years. He doesn't have the measurables to be an early NBA prospect. I would love if we could find some skilled big men that aren't super athletic to anchor the front court. If we could mix guys like that with a high level prospect here and there, things could be consistently fun.

At point guard. I think Dior could be one of those players who is beyond a position description. Michael Jordan wasn't a point guard. B. J. Armstrong and Steve Kerr were. Magic Johnson had Norm Nixon. Kobe had Derek Fisher.

I think Joe may turn out to be better than GMAC. Would GMAC have lost his spot to anyone as a senior?

been watching college basketball since the 70's. 2 constant tells every players has. hands on hips or hands on knees means that dude is tired. joe is tired.

What I find frustrating when watching Girard and Buddy is neither of them follow their shots. As a shooter you know when it is off and I never see either one of them going after them. There was a couple times yesterday that if they would have given any effort they could have had their board, thoughts?

Depends on where they shoot from. Sometimes your job is to rotate back on defense.

neither guard moves towards the basket on a shot attempt by anyone. one rotating back i could understand.
to prevent a breakout pass. both retreating probably goes a long way in explaining our rebounding woes.

Few things to make sure I hit all your points:

I’m not sure what your example of MJ, Magic and Kobe shows. First, you are talking about three of the greatest players of all time. Each of those three had a very clear primary position.

Dior has a very clear primary position. Could he flex? Sure. But why would you go all out to get the #1 PG and top five player in his class to then put him at SG?

I’m glad you think JGIII will be better than GMac. I think that’s going to be tough, but appreciate the optimism.

But let’s assume that he’s in the same situation and is at the same level as GMac senior year. GMac was forced/asked to carry way too much of the load. His body was breaking down and he couldn’t efficiently do everything that was asked. So if there was a stud PG that was one of the very top players that could come in, let Gerry go off ball, I think it would have led to a much better season, yes. GMac would have still started, but he wouldn’t have had to run his body ragged.

Back to the original point, Dior is not coming here to play SG or be on the bench as the backup PG.

JGIII can and should flex to being off the ball.

This team isn’t good right now. We are scrappy and competitive and fun to watch (except for the end of games, it seems) and the team truly seems to have chemistry, but we are not close to having the talent needed to be a real competitor to win the ACC or compete for a title. That’s ok, but it does mean that when talent comes in, they are playing.

Doesn't seem like our staff has ever stressed following your shot. Certainly not for guards. They might be stressing getting back instead or may they're not stressing either.

cough .billy edelin. cough. gerry wasn't running point every game.

I think Girard and Dior will share a lot of ball handling duties much like MCW and Triche did for the most part.

What if we recruit the #1 PG in the class of 2021 and he does't go pro after his frosh year, then who will start at PG in 2022-23?

Is this a trick question?

Lots of good posts in the thread :)

For me, he's still a bit erratic, but he's a Frosh taking some tough shots. The last two games he's really shown off a much more diverse set of tricks. He's had moments throughout the year, but it's good to see him consistently go out and show he can take it up a notch over entire games. It's been encouraging. I'm still not sold on his creativity passing - but he's had a few nice ones, and hopefully that just continues to evolve as well. Very encouraging all around - especially considering he's a Freshman. He's really been outstanding the past couple games keeping games tight when we REALLY needed it and not much to complain about from him this season. I'll leave out defense, as that's for another thread likely.
