Few things to make sure I hit all your points:
I’m not sure what your example of MJ, Magic and Kobe shows. First, you are talking about three of the greatest players of all time. Each of those three had a very clear primary position.
Dior has a very clear primary position. Could he flex? Sure. But why would you go all out to get the #1 PG and top five player in his class to then put him at SG?
I’m glad you think JGIII will be better than GMac. I think that’s going to be tough, but appreciate the optimism.
But let’s assume that he’s in the same situation and is at the same level as GMac senior year. GMac was forced/asked to carry way too much of the load. His body was breaking down and he couldn’t efficiently do everything that was asked. So if there was a stud PG that was one of the very top players that could come in, let Gerry go off ball, I think it would have led to a much better season, yes. GMac would have still started, but he wouldn’t have had to run his body ragged.
Back to the original point, Dior is not coming here to play SG or be on the bench as the backup PG.
JGIII can and should flex to being off the ball.
This team isn’t good right now. We are scrappy and competitive and fun to watch (except for the end of games, it seems) and the team truly seems to have chemistry, but we are not close to having the talent needed to be a real competitor to win the ACC or compete for a title. That’s ok, but it does mean that when talent comes in, they are playing.
My point was that if you get a great player the normal definition of any one position can be too confining to describe his talents and someone who does meet that definition might still retain that position. I never said that Dior wouldn't start. I think they both would and would share responsibilities. Neither will be coming off the bench. When Pearl Washington got here, Gene Waldron was the point guard and he didn't lose his spot. Scoop Jardine and Brandon Triche were both considered point guards and when we got Dion Waiters, they alternated in the back court. Neither a three year point guard or a 5 star freshmen are going to see much pine time.
GMAC as a freshman:
35.3m 15.1p 2.6r 5.0a 2.5s 0.1b +25.3 7.1mfg 0.3mft 2.8to 2.2pf -12.4 = 12.9NP 7.7OE 5.2FG
Joe Girard so far in his freshman year:
32.5m 16.0p 3.8r 4.4a 2.0s 0.1b +26.3 8.6mfg 0.3mft 2.2to 1.9pf -13.0 = 13.3NP 7.1OE 6.2FG
