Jonny Flynn appreciation thread...

I was introduced to Kellen Dunham who played for Butler in the mid 2010’s & his wife at the Final Four weekend (they’re joining the same sports ministry organization that I work for). We were talking Syracuse hoops (because you can’t meet me & not get that I really am about this Syracuse life😂), he mentioned Jonny Flynn as an all-time favorite for the Orange. It was the 2nd conversation I had about Jonny Flynn that same day! The ones who know, know. Jonny was a killer!

I have always wondered what the 2010 team would have been like with him. Would his ball dominance have screwed up the all time best chemistry or would his ability to penetrate at will have opened up even more deep shots for Rautins and Wes Johnson? Even with AO out, do we beat Butler with Flynn able to get his own shot, the one thing we lacked that didn't hurt us up until that point?

Those Niagara Falls teams were prime time viewing. Having always gone to Glens Falls for the final 4 they were always the team my cousins and I looked forward to the most. For a few years Flynn wasn't even top 3 in the pecking order being an underclassmen. The '05 team is probably the best high school team I've still seen to this day. Their lineup played at Cuse x2, UConn, UMass, Niagara, Buffalo and Starks ended up in the NFL.

I might put Flynn above Autry but I can see having him below. I feel like the light came on for Autry about halfway through his junior year. Had Flynn stuck around one more year it would have been a no brainer to have him higher, maybe even above GMac.
Z should be in any discussion and BE was no slouch.

The thing with Z is that it was essentially 1 year. If we were talking about best single season's by a PG, he'd have a stronger argument to be included. Wasn't he the first SU player to record a triple double or at least the first in a really long time?

First in a while.

Oddly enough, the last to achieve it was…
Allen Griffin.

Bing had 3.
Leo Rautins had 3.
DC, Laz, Griff 1 each.

Kinda shocked Billy Owens never got one.

Has Jonny been back since he left? He always had an electric personality. That Kansas game his freshman year was one of my all time favorite games.

He was a real talent but I doubt a guy who has chosen to isolate himself, is into the new game of college recruiting.
I think that's probably true. I've actually thought about this quite a bit and I think if we put ourselves in Jonny's shoes, we can understand why he has disappeared. His dream, everything he worked for, everything perhaps that he felt defined him was stolen away. And not because he wasn't good enough. Because he got hurt. Jonny wasn't Steph Curry but he was a legitimate NBA player. He didn't deserve this fate and I can imagine the injustice of it all could tear a person apart
