“Overpay” is such a meaningless, vague word. It’s contextual. 1) If you need that player to reach a better certainty of success, and you don’t get him or a substitute that helps you reach your objective, you’ve lost. 2) individual team budgets determine what is or isn’t an overpay for that particular team. If we can’t afford someone, say That. 3) Values are shifting upward. 4) No one knows what a player is worth until that season has played out. 5) Success drives revenue and effectively diminishes what you’ve paid. Failure makes what you’ve paid more expensive. If Michigan went over budget on any of their 25-26 players, do you think they regret that now?

Correct me if I’m wrong.

I think there’s a bigger picture to it than that.

How much revenue did BYU basketball generate this year with Dybantsa on the team compared to prior years when he wasn’t? What was the ROI on whatever portion BYU paid AJ?

I believe a lot of his NIL package were brand deals with Nike, Fanatics, etc. What was their ROI on signing AJ as a client. Nice visibility factor for BYU.

Future recruiting benefits? They got another top kid to take his place. Stream of NBA lottery picks still means something. AJ has mentioned BYUs player development program. BYU is a place you want to go to get to the league type message.

A lot of layers to it.

Correct that is why you have to pay for big time talent. Has nothing to do with JP per se just the way we operate needs to change.

Ok, so say we did dish 5 mill to Estrella and he came here. What if we’re left with peanuts to fill out the rest of the roster? Am I crazy for this take?

No. This is correct. He got between 4.5 and 5 million (which has been stated already). Syracuse has more than needs than Michigan will because their recruiting class is also an A+.

No totally agree. There are a ton of guys in the portal. We can’t act like we just lost out on all hope. It’s early.

We are supposed to be in top 3 of ACC and money for NIL wont be a problem for us?
Yes top 3rd half. I think we have 12 million. But giving 1 player who personally I don’t think is a superstar 5 mill of it is risky.

Maybe I’m wrong but 5 mill for 1 injury prone player seems crazy.
I don’t think it’s “crazy” per se because he’s one of the top guys in the market, but I think 5 million is a crazy number in general..

Obviously I wish we could have gotten him and been the too dog who had the most money but it’s not reality.

Yep. This is one of the issues with the current era. We need to remember this isn’t the nba. Everyone has different amounts of money which is why I don’t like the argument that these teams set the market. Everyone has different amounts so there isn’t 1 set market.

This is a nice take that i agree with. Estrella is a complementary piece to an elite five man, which Michigan will have. Syracuse will more than likely not. They have to diversify their roster. Paying what Michigan did for him is not a smart financial decision for Cuse. I don’t know why some are so up in arms?

Exactly! Don’t be mad at Gerry and the crew. They have a set amount of money which is enough to compete. But we can’t go all in one just a couple superstars who may not even be that.

Who is up in arms?

Who is up in arms?
I think he’s referring to the small arguments I and a couple other posters have been having. It should get cleared up, I messaged a couple people privately to hash the differences out. Doubt he is talking about you specifically with the up in arms comment
