Paul Johnson would tell him to go fly a kite. He's got simple rules:
1. Don't commit until you're sure.
2. When you commit we reserve your spot in the class and may dial recruiting efforts back for other recruits at your position.
3. If your commitment goes soft you lose your spot.
4. If your commitment goes soft don't bother contacting us again.

This should be told to every one of our recruits.

People complain that we don't recruit well enough, and then they complain when other BCS schools come in and try to sign our "committed" recruits. As you recruit more talented players, there will be more competition to keep them all the way to signing day. This is part of the deal... get over it.

On another note, I hope that the young man does what's right for him. I'd rather have him go somewhere else and be happy than to come to Syracuse and be miserable and end up leaving the program after a year or two. That is much worse in my opinion because you just "wasted" a roster spot on someone who likely never had a chance to contribute while they were there.

Agreed.

This is why you emphasize that you want the player to be sure before he gives his commitment. It may be advantageous to be on the tail-end of the recruit's visitation schedule.

I think its interesting manley committed and made such glowing comments about why he loved SU and then goes on visits.. but also if he hasn't really gone on visits he is doing a disservice to himself by not looking into options.

Maybe Marrone and Shafer told him to take visits. After all, they are free to him and gives him a chance to rip it up at another school with his buddy before they go in their separate directions.

yea its a great sign I agree and we have identified talent early...BUTTTT if we dont keep them its sucks big time. So well see here.

Yes, definitely an improvement over Bowling Green and Yale trying to steal our kids. Talent evaluation is much better under this coaching staff. All programs lose kids who flip. And in time, we will start getting a few to flip to us at the last second.

“I currently still have the verbal to Syracuse, but I’m keeping my options open. I wanted to see Missouri. I’ve had some interest in Missouri, they recruited me early in the process. I just wanted to make sure I’m choosing the right school. Syracuse was my only visit, I loved it there, but I want to make sure that I see at least one more school before I make my decision.” - Josh Manley

This time of year is for handing out steak knives or Cadillacs. Marrone needs to stop telling recruits to decide what's best for them and tell them Syracuse is best for them.

It sounds great that "bigger" schools are looking at our recruits, but the bottom line is it doesn't help us if we lose the good ones.

If they've waited this long to offer, he has to consider: Plan-A at Syracuse, Plan-B (or -C) at some other places.

That's perfectly reasonable.

This happens every year-not a new phenomenon. Remember Phillip Thomas and Miami, Peterman and Michigan.?

I totally agree with this, but the kids more than likely do not. They want the bigger named school that get's all the TV exposure. I know and you know that SU IS a big name school, but to these kids, the only thing they hear about SU is losing. Most kids today think that the bigger winning schools will get them to the next level. So sure, SU looks good to these kids until the big boy's start calling them. And until SU starts winning on a consistent basis and getting the media attention again, I see a lot of these situations happening.

What do you mean? We're 20-0!

Somehow certain posters will still fault this kid for being reasonable it's amazing
I don't think anyone's faulting the kid.

I don't know the staff's philosophy... either they want kids to take their visits before committing or they're fine with a kid committing while he may still take other visits. If they request the former and observe the latter then I could see that being frustrating for the staff. I believe that's what you're seeing from some posters here... a commitment is a commitment. The "soft verbal" is like seeing a bird that was in your hand fly to the bush... with several other open hands for the bird to fly to.

IMO, you can never blame a southern kid for wanting to play in the SEC. It is a way of life that they grow up with.
