Juan Castillo: New OL Coach

I doubt there's enough money/interest but maybe Justin Outten? He's with Seattle right now but he's taken a few title demotions the last two seasons in NFL. Wonder if he's interested in getting back east and coaching OL.

I'm just guessing but not really sure they would have done anything differently regarding adding OL talent. Seems like getting coaching and getting talent are sort of independent. I think they must have decided they liked the young talent enough to not have to get any other addition OL from the portal other than Akinshllo from UCLA. But they probably realized they need better OL coaching in general and it was even more important at the moment with all of the young players in that group.

I was really optimistic about this hire. If we lose Castillo, hopefully we can find a good replacement.

I'm sure it won't happen but would be great if Jeff Stoutland decided to come back to SU since he's avaialble. He was a grad student at SU from '86-'87 and also OL coach here from '97-'99 under Paul Pasqualoni and OC's Kevin Rogers and DeLeone. But I assume he would prefer an NFL gig and could think SU as a college opportunity is not up to par considering his last college coaching gig was Alabamba from '11-'12 where they were ranked #1 both years.

2. OL and DL is VERY expensive now, we had so many holes to get players for I think it was a "moneyball" approach.

A moneyball approach would be bringing in cheap/underappreciated/undersized FCS guys with experience. Moneyball approach is certainly not spending big on QB#2 and WR #4,5,6,7 and playing low to mid tier 3 star 19 year olds on the OL.

You know how much we spent on QB #2 and WRs?
We did bring in FCS guys and a JUCO WR.
So yes I would call this a moneyball approach by doing that and NOT spending on OL...

Any chance there's a buyout and we can go after a guy like Stoutland with double the salary to offer? e.g. let's say we offered Castillos 900k. Giants buy it out. We now have $1.8M to go after someone else who is highly qualified.

Are you sure? Obviously head coaches have buyouts and I think coordinators due as well. It would seem dumb not to have any buyout. Of course colleges want to bring in the best coaches and you don't want to hinder that with drastic contract stipulations but there has to be some repercussion for a coach leaving. Typically they are leaving for what would be considered a better higher paying job, I would guess position coaches typically have buyouts that are typically much lower and probably a smaller percentage of what their salary is. I'd probably structure the buyout based on timeframe of when it really puts the school in a lurch or not. You have to recoup something right?

I might be wrong but since most are on year to year contracts I don't think they are added for most assistances unless they have a multi year contract and are pretty good.

Year to year contract shouldn't matter if they coached the full year. If there is a separation before the year is up I would think there should be a buyout. The contract is not honored. I would think these protect both the school and the coach somewhat if they are terminated early. I would think if the school terminated their contract early, the coach would just get paid the rest of their contract, not any additional money on top of that.

What does an oline coach make? How much does get if he gets a better job in college vs a better job in the pros. If adding it makes it harder to get a better job why would they want to get it in writing.

Sure the schools want it.

But if a guy is making 200K and the new job makes 250K how much can you really penalize a person?

OLine D1 coach makes around 500k, they are typically on the hiring end of the group of assistants.

Would definitely be beyond legendary. Considered the best OL coach in the sport, still technically under contract with Philly. Even if they released him to interview elsewhere there’s gonna be a line of NFL teams ready to throw bags at him we couldn’t come close to.
