Just some thoughts..

DVR’d the game and just finished up.

Va Tech is a good matchup for us. No dominant big man and smallish guards. It was clear our game plan was to punish their small back court and attack with the bounce. We will beat this team 7 of 10.

We will have success against teams that can’t punish our smallish front court.

Marek drew what seemed like 10 fouls today. We had a somewhat friendly whistle in the first half especially.

Dear Buddy. No more 12 dribble back down iso fadeaway 12 footers please. It’s a horrible pct play. I know it was probably part of the game plan to post up their little guts, but it’s not what he can do.

Quincy is the most improved player in the league right? He’s climbing the pantheon of post players quickly. His footwork might be top five already. Wallace, Otis Hill, Hak are my top 3 here...Q might be 4...I’m sure I’m leaving a couple out.

Watch the difference in off the ball movement when Kadary is running the point. Players cut because they know they’ll get the ball EXACTLY where they can do the most with it. That kind of feel is rare.

Nice energy by Griffin early. Set the tone. He’s a good player, needs seasoning though.

Not having Sidibe really limits our upside. At some point we’re gonna run into a team with a post presence who will murder us.

I’d love to see 4-8 minutes per game with Kadary Griffin up top, with Q, Marek and Jesse. ...and press. Use up Jesse’s fouls trying to protect the rim.
I think Q is the most patient forward with his footwork I can remember. He'll fake turn, fake and turn again to get a shot. I think the travel called on him was that a ref couldn't believe he could move that much without moving his pivot foot,

Good observation. He plays like the opposing player we always wish we had.

His HS tape was all face the basket stuff. Which was very good., he’s added weight and developed an almost shocking post up game. Goes to show how misleading some tapes can be. Gotta see kids play the whole game to get a feel.

Good shooters would be good high volume shooters.

If Duncan Robinson shoots more than 8 3’s in any game I am okay if he goes 1 for 8 in that one game. He is an elite shooter. I know he is going to make north of 40%.

We have don’t have elite shooters.
We have a good shooters(AG, BB) who have green lights and take shots that they shouldn’t take but since they have green lights they are seen as good shots.

There is absolutely no reason that QG doesn’t lead the team in shots barring foul trouble but Wayne Newton has shown he can make 3’s.
Same for Robert Braswell.
They don’t even get a chance.
They are more athletic and can help the defense.
If John Beilein was coaching this offense, for instance, the team would have better movement and Buddy, Griff and JG would be getting better shots and have better shooting percentages. Not saying we’d be great or anything. JB just isn’t that elite of of an offensive coach. He was able to rely on top talent for so many years, he didn’t have to be that imaginative with his offensive sets and play calling.

I'm mad at you for putting that thought into my brain and then having to visualize the possibilities for a good 30 seconds.

I should clarify. It’s not that JB wasnt or can’t be a good offensive coach. He’s capable. It’s just that he refuses to adjust his “keep it simple stupid” philosophy. We don’t have the elite talent to overwhelm people right now with an offense that’s simple. You need offensive complexity and sophistication (and teaching) to overcome the talent deficiencies at a few positions. How about start by practicing for more than an hour or hour and a half (like we’ve apparently been doing for years)?

The reason we’re not seeing Griffin at the two is because Jim son is at the two! It’s pre-determined that no matter how bad buddy plays SU is better with him on the floor!

if you think that’s crazy, it is crazy but so is not recruiting another two guard for half almost half a decade

2 more reasons - AG has a terrible handle and is an excellent rebounder, which is a valuable skill wasted at the 2.

Why is being an excellent rebounder at the 2 a wasted skill? I YEARN for the days when our 2 is even an interested rebounder. With today's reliance on three pointers, long rebounds are far more common. It's an ideal time to play someone who actually tries to get a rebound. Someone who can also move so much more quickly on defense as well.

As for the handle, that's really only important when we are being pressed. Buddy often immediately runs downcourt to get into position on offense, rarely helping out in bringing the ball up in settled situations.

I don't think he has a terrible handle by the way, just poor decision making. Few college players can split three defenders off the dribble. That's the first thing I would remove from his arsenal to improve his turnovers. Secondly, he gets careless, like the play where he dribbled in front of him on offense and promptly got the ball swiped.

it's a wasted skill on this team because we have precious little rebounding and AG is very good at that - I agree with you about AG's handle - maybe if the team was constructed a little differently he would make a great 2 - but with current roster, he's probably better at the 3

I yearn for a backcourt of Triche/Waiters as much as everyone else but that's not who we have

No its not wasted, its valuable because then you would have another quality rebounder on the floor from the guard spot to help the 3-4-5

Actually, with him at the two, it means we have another excellent rebounder, like Woody or Bras, at the forward position. I'll give you that his handle holds him back from being a 2, but him at the 2 means we have a better rebounding team on the floor, except if Buddy is playing the 3.

I'm not sure Woody or Bras are excellent rebounders..
some guys are good at rebounding and some are not - we currently have 2 players on the roster that are good at it - I guess JB figured they should both play in the frontcourt

for the record - I am for trying many different lineups to see what works - but JB has other ideas

On the surface your statement is correct but ...if you chop things up it’s very obvious that buddies handle is no better than griffins (just more careful) and the rebounding point you made is nonsense because anytime you put Griffin at the two your are improving the whole rebounding of the team on the backline and frontline

I think they are, but I understand your hesitation. That said, let's give Jesse some run in the middle and have Marek at one of the forward slots. Add Kadary to the top of the zone and that's by far our best rebounding team.

And yeah, adding in some variety will help make it harder for other coaches to game plan against us so easily.

Some new lineups are needed, whether we see Jesse or AG at the 2
AG at the 3 is probably stunting the development/opportunity for Woody, provided he is healthy and available
Buddys mins need to be distributed and cut, yes he has developed his game a bit but he is still mostly a 1 trick pony, a shooting specialist, whose shooting numbers this year are ugly. On previous SU teams he'd be the 8th man (so would JG and Marek for that matter) but now he is the guy taking the most shots and minutes, not a good formula.

This is ridiculous
Coaches don't bench one of their best hitters or shooters to get them out of a slump. The slump ends when they start hitting shots during games.

Facts not in evidence.

Mookie got benched a lot.

This team is hosed if Buddy is the clean-up hitter.
