Class of 2023 K/P Jadyn Oh (VA) PWO COMMITTED TO SYRACUSE (7/21/23)

Before anyone reads into this too much any further, there was only one dedicated place kicker on the spring roster.

I agree. Looks like he has a strong leg and could possibly help us on kickoffs right now.

Could not find any stats on Oh regarding his accuracy kicking FGs in HS. His grades at the kicking school seem to indicate he could be better here.

Denaburg also has a strong leg but his accuracy might improve if he is able to focus exclusively on placekicking.

I don't think we can afford to have more than one placekicker and one punter on scholarship at any given time. Are only scholarship athletes allowed to get NIL? It would be nice to be able to give a walk on making regular contributions some help with tuition even if they are not on full scholarship.

At the least, it is good to have some options here.
I'm ok with having 3 kickers and 2 long snappers. Kicking is such an important part of the game and its one that SU can if it provides the resources getting a leg up on:) As most of the powerhouse schools will rely on walk ons. Winning the kicking game especially the punting game which leads to field position is really important for us.

Many programs (including SU in the past!) bring in specialists as walk ons and award scholarships when they prove the ability to perform. I will never understand the need to have 3 punters and potentially 2 PKs on scholarship.

And yes. Walk-ons can receive NIL.

Personally I am strongly moving in that direction also of bringing them in as walk-ons and then award the scholarship if the performance merits it. It just takes up too many valuable scholarships if they don't work out.

Sure we might lose some recruits to other schools who offer them scholarships, but I think more schools are going along with this line of thinking.

Gotta be a walk on

Between punters/FG kickers we shouldn't have more than 3 total on scholie. Add in a LS to make 4.
OrangeExtreme has Oh listed as a walk-on. Here's how our special teams roster looks:

Scholarship K- Denaburg So
P- Marburg So
P-Stonehouse So
LS-Callahan (GR)

Walk-on P/K- Hawkins Jr
P/K- Oh FR
LS- Midkiff
LS- Strangle

Not sure on P- Williams

I think our ST strategy for many years, across several coaches, was to differentiate by offering scholarships, which in turn enables us to land some high-quality prospects at both P and PK.

We just have too many now. I expect several to get "the talk" as soon as the season ends.

That’s exactly what we’ve done regarding differentiation, which is logical and we should have an advantage when you consider that plus the venue. We’ve had a low success rate with the scholarship kids for whatever reason however. Hofrichter was very good, but Szmyt began as a walk on I believe. This latest crop doesn’t seem to have delivered.

Poet-Warrior Riley Dixon (FOR HEISMAN!!) started off as a PWO.

Naturally, he earned his scholly and then some.
By throwing TD passes, hurdling defenders and air-punching others.
And punting the ever-loving snot outta the ball.

Tough thing about "the talk" for specialists is that many schools rely on walkons for P and PK (and LS for that matter) and only offer the scholarship when they;ve proven themselves. Tough to talk a kid into portalling if they aren't pretty confident they will get a free ride elsewhere.

That's fair.

Given how many football players attend school year round, and seem on pace to graduate early, "the talk" could also be that the program expects them to move on once they've completed degrees -- even if that's after 2.5 or 3 years. Lots of different ways this can be approached.

And that fifth year is never guaranteed. There have been a number of fifth year seniors over the years who have been told there simply wouldn’t be a spot for them. However, if they needed to finish up their degree I know the program has helped them find the financial support they needed.
