Keep an eye on Amato

Totally agree. I love what our defense is usually like. This is why the Daost as DC thing is interesting. I get he #standswithshafer but assuming he follows shafer somewhere he probably isn't going to be a DC any time soon. Probably a better chance to be Dc here.
It makes a lot of sense to consider promoting Daoust to DC.

- Keep SS's aggressive defensive system in place
- Retain one of the top recruiters on staff
- below market salary
- continuity

Daoust was the only AC quoted as saying: Hey we didn't win enough. We knew going on we had to win

Sounded like he was positioning himself not to be considered "Shaf's guy " by Coyle and new staff.

As for Amato, I'll repost the following from earlier in the week...

Akron's defensive rankings during Amato's time there (2012-2015)

2012 - #101
2013 - #60
2014 - #47
2015 - #17

Very steady improvement. He knows the ACC, extensive head coaching experience. As long as he still has the energy and fire to coach, what's the problem?

Not sure why people would be oppose to this. He has a good couple years to coach. Let his understudies take over after that. This will help Babers transition well in the ACC.

I don't care how old Amato is, if he can coach up our young D for a couple of years then I will take that. Akron being in the top 20 defensively or top 20 in anything is impressive. And imagine the influence Amato would have with the conference and bowl officials and the playoff committee:

Amato: Mr Coyle would greatly appreciate a college football playoff bowl
Committee member: but you went 6-6
Amato: Mr Coyle does not like to be disappointed. He would appreciate a college football playoff bowl
Committee member: I understand completely...

I believe it is called ageism. Dude can obviously still coach. And he didn't threaten to break my legs if I didn't post this so I do mean it. ;)

Babers knows his success in the ACC will come down to his defenses getting stops. I think it would be smart of him to bring a guy with lots of P5 experience

I agree, it will be his most important hire.
Not sure it's much of a possibility, but what would you think of Daoust getting the DC gig?

If Amato is such a great DC why has he been at Akron the last 4 years?

That's a fair question, and I have no idea, but the numbers posted above don't lie. That's a positive trend every year he's been there.

Maybe health and age concerns? I know he had to take a year or two off because of cancer.

His buddies are there and he's old. would you rather go with a young DC that knows nothing about the ACC? I would be skeptical of this 4 years ago but his defenses have improve every year there which tells me he still got it.

Exactly, plus if the D is successful it'll make a nice constant flow for 4 to 6 years (if Amato stays for 2 or 3) to go with the explosive O.

Chuck Amato (born June 26, 1946), aka "The Chest," was the head football coach of North Carolina State University. Familiar to millions of college football TV viewers for his robust torso and vivid wraparound shades, Amato has been a sideline icon since his first stint at FSU.

After we win the ACC, we're all gonna head down to Atlantic City to party with with The Chest yo.

Imagine the letters we could get from staff asking us to buy season tix.

Amato's message : "all you mopes better buy tickets or you'll be swimming with the fishes"
