KenPom #68

Going into the season parallels between those two teams are pretty significant.

Elite shooter who doesn't do much else, highly recruited shooting guard who hasn't quite lived up to his rankings, a journeyman point guard replacing a star...

A major difference is that the 2000 team had Billy Celuck and a freshman Jeremy McNeil at center, and we've yet to see if freshman Freeman can do anything like senior Damone Brown's 16 and 9.

If he does, this season will be A-OK

Edit: Chris Bell is actually a very interesting parallel to Preston Shumpert. Shumpert only played 20 minutes a game his sophomore year, and few could have predicted he would blow up for 19 per game, averaging 9 attempts per game inside the arc after previously being a three point specialist. His development of an inside the arc post game really made the combination of Brown/Shumpert a deadly offensive duo.
In his first 2 years Shumpert averaged over 6R per40. Chris Bell currently sits at 3.5R per40.

Fair enough... The parallels kind of end at their three point shooting. Shumpert was a lot heavier and far less bouncy than Bell.

My point was that players add dimensions to their game all the time. Bell getting better isn't outside the realm of possibility.

It isn't. He already got better last year. But if he doesn't get better at rebounding it really hurts our team. He has been basically the worst rebounding forward in Syracuse history based on the minutes he gets. That's not an exaggeration.

My biased opinion, Ken Pom bites. I remember them holding up our resume against teams 30 or 40 spots higher ( last march ). virtually no decided difference. Was it also KenPom that was jacking up teams ratings for beating Southeastern Ag and Tech of greater mechanicsberg community college by 70 pts.

We caused our own pain there... We would beat teams by a basket or two, and get taken to the woodshed when we lost.

We "looked" analytically a lot worse than we actually were as a result.

Our "luck" rating was very high. This means, based on our raw offense and defense numbers (points scored and allowed) our record was way better than it should be.

When the talking heads look at our win/loss record, they aren't taking into account margin of victory and a dozen other things that Ken Pomeroy and other analysts do take into account.

The net result is that our record and our computer rankings were very different.

So... We have the option of scheduling 10 blowout victories every year, like the Big 12 did last season, or we can keep doing what we doing and hope the ratings get better.

Keep in mind last year was a complete aberration for us. They got almost every team right, we were the unlucky one that managed to really skew the results against us.

The thing that pissed me off is that the committee is supposed to know these things, and then decide if we pass the eye test.

Getting blown out by Clemson and NC State to end the season was game over. If we had won either if those games, it's a vastly different conversation.

People discount how bad Bell is other than his shooting, he doesn't even move well off thr ball. He is a bad basketball player.

A bad basketball player that happens to be elite at the most important part of the game.

If he can shore up some of his weaknesses, he can become very valuable because his shooting is so important to winning.

We disagree so much regarding Bell. I hope I'm correct.

Hug itI hope you are too.

As I have contributed a fair bit of crap to the KenPom madness over the years, hoping I can spam this thread slightly with an invite to anyone to join the board's NBA Fantasy Basketball League.

Go to the link below if you are interested, it is a casual but still somewhat competitive league. We have 2 spots open if anybody interested. The Draft is Sunday at 5:30. DM me if you have any questions.

actually teams in KenPom in low 40s make the tourney. That's typically the cutoff. This doesn't take into account a lot of the automatic bids from tourney champs in mid-major, low mid-majors and low majors. For example, there are no America East, Patriot or Ivy League teams in this list and that's just off the top of my head.
And 68 teams go dancing. Sign me up for Dayton.
