Thing with George is that he never was elite or insanely efficient. I think the goal was someone that was a real lead guard at the ACC level that could elevate others (IMO).
Last Year / This Year
FGA: 39.4% / 39.3%
3PT%: 33.9% / 31.6% (obvious decrease here for sure)
APG: 6.5 / 5.5 (note - 3.0 TOs per game both years)
PER: 14.1 / 13.6 (both aren't great)
TS%: 50.3% / 52.1%
Point being, I had the same reaction as the year went along because he wasn't blowing by his man or just dominating really. And I think that is ok, with his inefficiency, if you are setting up guys in a system that makes them better with George being the guy that gets the ball up the court, gets the offense started, gets guys the ball where they need them...
So I think without a higher level offensive strategy/system from the staff and good coaching, I think he becomes more valuable... However, with our dysfunctional system, I think it renders him sporadically good, at best, and really mediocre day in and day out (and even below that a lot of times). He's not an efficiency guy that equates to wins (think like CP3 in the NBA for each team he went to) and he's not a physically imposing lead guard (think like D Rose was that would put the fear of god into the defense)... and on top of that, we then have our guys in Donnie, Kingz and JJ playing really bumpy offense (again, an example is JJ modeling after D Wade or Kingz being modeled after Klay, etc), we have these blips of offensive prowess but chronically dysfunctional on offense.
It's ok to not have a guy that can dominate from the lead guard physically or see the game five steps ahead, but if he isn't teed up to even make the lives of every other guy on the court just a little easier, it's going to be rough most of the time.
