Kiyan Anthony Appreciation

It was explored a couple years ago. Nike said no. It was a weird happening of events.
I mean we’ve sucked for 10 years. In recruiting, you are your last 7 years. Nike knows kids today aren’t into Syracuse. There is barely any Syracuse merch in comparison to other schools with better brands and more success.

The question has been raised - why is Kiyan playing so many minutes and why does he have the ball at critical times? I think the answer is that he is the only player we have who can consistently create his own quality shots. Sometimes they drop, and sometimes they don't, but I have been impressed by the number of layups and easy mid-range shots he gets off each game. And like it or not, SU's iso offense requires guards that can create their own shot (which is why George has struggled more than expected, IMHO).

His lack of strength with the ball is hindering some good instincts. Melo came in and was able to power thru, but Kiyan is not. Soft dribbling the ball and soft getting shots up. Not sure that's a this year thing to solve, but kinda surprised he came in with that level of play with the access he had to conditioning.

I think you are right - he will be much more effective once he gains strength. Some definite off-season work to be done in that area. He could also work on his passing, as he is turning the ball over regularly when attempting entry passes. That being said, he is a big, crafty guard with decent ball-handling skills for a freshman. I like his offensive game so far.

Red said before the season started his biggest need to develop is his strength. He will be a handful with another twenty pounds.

Melo was a mutant as a freshman.

Kiyan isn't a total bean pole. We've had a lot worse. He'll get stronger, he's just young.

Exactly. Not many freshman come in with the ability to perform at the high level Melo did.

Kiyan physically has been as good as we could have realistically hoped for. He does get out muscled and pushed around sometimes as freshman often do, but he generally holds his own. He doesn't have amazing speed or athleticism, but he's not a stiff by any means. He has good instincts and has clearly learned some crafty things from his dad and seems to have been coached well. He's a legitimate student of the game.

And I agree with the OP, he's not dominant yet and has some learning and growing to do, but Kiyan has IT.

Maybe he should also chill a bit on some of those deep 3s. He's shooting 24% right now. I guess I shouldn't be surprised with a freshman, but how he got out of the gates the first three games and what he's done since is a bit disappointing (at least to me). I still very much believe in the kid, especially with who is in his corner helping him with his development.

Never count on a freshman for three point accuracy.

Big Kiyan fan. But he’s a year away. He will be hit or miss this season.
I agree that he is a year away. But given our recent guard play, I think he will get a lot of playing time from here out. JJ and George are going to have to become more of a scoring threat to keep him on the bench.

He does take some DEEP 3's and many of those would have provoked the quick hook from JB. I think he has been learning - and has been dialing those back lately. Now if he can just up that free-throw percentage. :)

I think Kiyan should be a little more aggressive from three. It would force guys to fly at him, giving him opportunities to get in the lane. Doesn’t mean they have to be 25 foot threes.

If I'm the other team, I would welcome him being aggressive from three as a 24% shooter. More the merrier.
