Kiyan

Kiyan is going to bring this program national notoriety and publicity again, which we are already starting to see. I don’t think it’s a coincidence our game against Drexel is on Peacock. At some point next season NBC may try to get some of our games. Also, pretty ironic and cool that, in his debut, Kiyan scored the number of points that equaled his dad’s jersey number here.
Notoriety? Why?

I think his skill and savvy belie his athleticism
Would people sign up for these numbers. In college, 31 minutes per game, 12 ppg, 5 rpg, 3 apg, 39% from 3. 19th overall pick in the draft.

8 years so far in the NBA with averages of 28 minutes per game, 12 ppg, 4 rpg and 3 apg and 38% from 3.

Another guy who might not win any strongman contests, but is very cerebral and makes everyone around him better. Kevin Huerter. They call him Red Velvet for a reason. Smooth.

I thought somebody's Moten comparison for Kiyan was not bad.

He plays in control. Really sound fundamentally. Knows how to use his body and create shots. Gonna be a lot of fun watching him play.

He is one of those guys who can really swing our season. We knew coming in he was skilled, what we dont know (and Binghamton cant teach us) is how he will play against super athletic defenders.

I noticed he had 10 points that came from just taking his man 1 on 1 and another 5 that came from good off the ball movement.

The ones that came from off ball movement are ones I think he can get all year long against anybody. I would guess he wont just be able to take power 5 defenders 1 on 1 the way he could against Binghamton, but if he can ... that would be a game changer.

I can't wait to see how he handles bigger, stronger and outright better defenders. Melo has taught him well. He is really crafty.
Yeah, this will be the key. I think the story on his athleticism is that when you pair good (not necessarily elite) athleticism with length and high-level skill, it’s a pretty tough combination.

But usually those players need some strength too. So tougher, more athletic, physical defenders will likely take some time for him to adjust to. Would guess he’ll struggle some against high-level competition now and likely be much better as he adjust later in the year (Feb/march). Will be interesting to watch.

I agree about his defense. I was critical of it during the exhibition games but he displayed much more effort and intensity against Binghamton. Great to see.

I have to say, even though it is only Binghamton, this is the best we have looked in several years. Lots of athleticism, rebounding, interchangeable depth. I’d like to see us cut back on some of the ill advised 3 pointers and focus better on free throw shooting. That’s about my only criticisms so far.

Edit: perhaps my biggest praise is the level of intensity we displayed until the buzzer sounded. No letdown and I loved it.
Every year I say we should start inside out. These young kids just wanna jack a three where a drive and a 8fter would work better and get them in a positive flow.

I love what he did against Binghamton, but two of those baskets are going to get blocked and turn into fast breaks the other way against quality competition. Another make was a fade away jumper one step inside the 3 pt line (almost the worst shot in basketball by expected TS%). He made it look really good, but it isn't a shot we want to take very often. One step further back, it is worth 3 points and another step or two closer and the make% goes up dramatically. Bad shots go in sometimes, but you don't want to plan on it.

I loved his three pointer coming off the screen. Really quality basketball, from George screening, Anthony coming off the screens decisively, Freeman getting him the ball in perfect cadence for Anthony to jump stop without a shuffle or dribble to get his feet set, and a perfectly in rhythm shot that was nothing but net. That's the kind of basket we can get against teams with top level defense, like Houston.

I wish we ran versions of that same play more often, for Anthony and Kingz.

Calling it now. Kiyan goes pro after this sophomore season. He steps in and starts next year at SG. Averages 18+ ppg next year and is a first rounder. Donnie a first rounder this year. Kiyan next year. And Cuse starts putting players back into the NBA

Kiyan needs to play a lot of minutes this year, probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 minutes a game. His upside is unbelievable and he can do things that none of our other guards can do. And he will continue to get better throughout the season.
