Kiyan

Going into the season I had realistic but positive expectations for Kiyan. He has been a hard worker throughout his career and constantly improved.

Now I’m not sure how good he can be. On one hand I recognize he is a freshman who can continue to work, improve and grow. But he has shown very little this season. His shot has been beyond disappointing as is his propensity to miss his first foul shot. He doesn’t appear particularly interestied in playing defense and embracing the grind. He doesn’t go for 50/50 balls. His athleticism appears limited and he has trouble getting by ACC caliber players or staying in front of them on d. The ball stops with him and his assist numbers are awful as is his patience and often his shot selection. His constantly untucked shirt is unimportant but still annoying.

I admired his progression pre college because he continually worked and improved. Obviously this is a delicate situation. Perhaps some tough love and increased accountability from his next coach would help. I would love for this kid to succeed here obviously. I just wonder if he can.

Had a couple good offensive plays last night but is completely clueless on defense. Watching him I just wonder how much he actually likes to play basketball. I see no urgency or competitiveness.

I'd love to see him in a fast-paced system where he needs to rebound and be fully involved (and get others involved) or sit. I think he has the tools to thrive and it would encourage some maturity as well.

What kills me is that he slows the offense down to a stand still at times. Other than creating his own shot (occasionally), he just isn't a playmaker.
Spot on. I thought he was actually better yest as opposed to his dreadful play of late… but my god, every time he got the ball, he held the ball for a 4 count. Like, let’s go…

From what I watched last night (most of the first half), I didn't see much of anything positive. His 1 for 6 shooting and 2/4 at the line with zero assists and one rebound doesn't appear he did much after I stopped watching either.

I'm hoping that perhaps Kiyan can have a Demetris Nichols type four year career. Nichols could barely see the floor his freshman year and was simply in over his head. Little flashes his soph year, but it was his junior year and especially senior year that he came into his own. I wouldn't consider him an elite athlete at all. But he was crafty and effective.

If he worried about learning defense as much as he worries about getting away playing with his shirt untucked he might be an All-American.
What is his deal with the jersey and keeping it tucked in? With his access to cash you would think he would get someone to tailor his jersey so it fits him comfortably.

Kiyan had EXACTLY the freshman year that I expected, after watching him in HS and seeing his strengths / limitations.

If anything, I was more surprised by the hot start he got off to the first couple of games, where he looked way more efficient offensively than expected.

But he reverted to the mean quickly, and the lousy coaching did him no favors.

If he opts to come back and buy into whatever the new coach demands, I'm fine with it. I'm also fine if his camp opts to bail. I think he has potential to be a good player, but he isn't a high end difference maker -- and if he had a different last name, nobody would care any more than they did when a player like Woody Newton transferred out.

He's a high volume shot taker, but an inefficient shot maker, who bogs down the offense and shows questionable shot selection.

So either way, I'm good.

I turned the game off when he missed the layup. He did well getting to the basket, and I knew the game was over after that miss.

Eh you can definitely train that. But it takes dedication. He shouldn’t even pick up a basketball for 3 months and just work speed and agility

I think he should dribble for an hour a day. Not take shots, just dribble the damn ball until you're better at it.

I am prepared to die on the hill that the quality of his play highly correlates with who he was on the floor with. Don't think it was a coincidence that he shined when he was out there with the starting lineup, and struggled at times when the minutes came without our starting point guard and with Souare sharing minutes with him.

Agreed. His skills right now outpace his physical attributes by a mile. That may or may not work for a "that's what she said" joke, but it definitely puts limits on a player on the basketball court.

Kiyan seems to be a scorer and scorer only, and that's not a recipe for success with his limitations.
He really doesn't seem athletic or quick enough to consistently produce at this level, at least not yet. He can get stronger and maybe quicker, but it's going to be tough for him to be effective off the dribble without that. And it's surprising how poorly he's shot the ball, though shot selection may be part of that.

He can be a good scoring option, though unlikely the main guy, with improvements in strength/quickness, while really focusing on becoming a better shooter. That's where he'll have the chance to make his mark.

But if he doesn't get drastically better defensively and start offering more than the occasional bucket, he simply isn't a heavy minutes guy anywhere. Not sure he has the dawg in him.

Same with Kris Joseph although he was a better athlete. Remember how green he looked in the 6 OT game?
