Kiyan

Not sure what you’ve been watching, but once we hit the ACC portion of the schedule, Kiyan would get the ball stripped or get the foul call nearly every time he drove the lane.

He's regressed and gotten worse in conference. The stats bore it out. Outside if he can get hot, he's basically unplayable at this point. Not that it matters since the season is over.

Hear me out. The “Anthony” name alone garners so much attention from everyone. His freshman year honestly kind of went how I expected. Very few freshman can come in and really have an impact. He did have some good moments. Problem is, his foot speed just isn’t there, and I’m not sure you can improve it much. The worry I have is him not deserving much more time his sophomore year, and a new coach having to worry about playing him because of the name. I assume both Melo and Kiyan thought Kiyan would be a starter come year 2. IMO, with a tournament roster/coach next yr, I’m not sure how much more involved Kiyan should be. I hate to say it, but he may need another year of limited minutes, and then hopefully being ready year 3. However, no one is really willing to trust the process anymore… You can go look back, I have always been a big Kiyan fan, so this absolutely is no hate towards him. I just worry that a new coach will be put in a tough spot, that’s all. And at the end of the day, Melo is a dad, and we saw him sort of get involved once already with the instagram comment. Maybe finding a new home at a slightly lesser program would be best for everyone. Heck, he could always come back!

The issue with his slowness could be mental as much as it is physical. Knowing where to be, how, and when to get there is as important as having plus athleticism. I think Kiyan has sufficient speed/quickness to compete. I think/hope he just needs some better coaching and more time in a D1 strength and conditioning program. Lots of players over the years made sizable leaps in their sophomore season. I don’t see why Kiyan couldn’t.

Totally agree. He has a good game maybe once every 5 or 6 games, at this point.
He’s the reason why Autry broke out the zone, a month or so ago, to try to cover for his bad defense.

Exactly! Long gone were the 4 games against those ranked 342,319,356, and 327 in the NET

Last year when he was at LIL, I watched Kiyan's team play against IMG, which had Sadiq White, on ESPN. Was excited to see both recruits in the same game.

Both teams were loaded with D1 prospects, both nationally ranked HS programs.

Sadiq was the best player in the game. He kind of plays a no frills game, and just got the job done inside. Canned a wide open three, when they gave him space and dared him to shoot. Otherwise, it was all non-flashy inside stuff. He worked hard, fought, and did dirty work inside. So while it was clear that he had a lack of offensive versatility overall at that early stage of his developmental curve, you could see that he was a high-end athlete who battled inside despite being skinny, and was relentless. That's pretty much how his freshman year has unfolded, and he played about as I expected. Athlete, somewhat limited offense, but a hard worker with upside.

Kiyan in that game took a TON of shots. Missed most of them. Made some, and did some nice things, too. But my impression of him coming out of that game was that he was a good ball handler, but a high volume shot taker, and not an efficient scorer. Took too many deep threes, but he can make some. Streaky offensive player, but not an efficient one. That's what i expected him to be this year.

When the year began, and JJ got hurt the first game, Kiyan was forced to start several games early and I was surprised by how efficient he was. Shades of Moten to some degree. Now, in hindsight, the level of competition was why he looked so good, but he really tapered off after that hot start. It isn't all bad -- he has played a lot of minutes, and flashed intermittently. Most frosh have ups and downs -- games they play well, sandwiched between games where they don't do much. I still think that Kiyan's best ball is in front of him, but he has a LOT to work on -- notably, his physique and quickness. But he basically ended up being the high volume shot taker, relatively average athlete, and generally inefficient scorer that I saw during that HS matchup.

Kiyan needs to be pushed. He doesn’t know how to run. He just lolly gags up the court, even on the break. With Kiyan you have to guard him on the perimeter. With JJ, you didn’t. Spacing should be better.

Yeah, there have been a few live ball turnovers and loose balls where Kiyan just packs it up. It's really frustrating.

His slowness is def not mental. He just does not have foot speed. Noticeable even when he starred at LuHi

Agree with almost everything, as I also watched a ton of LuHi last season. The only thing I differ on is his handle. Even at LuHi, it was loose to say the least.

Kiyan is a pretty easy cover right now. JJ can at least go by you. I’m hopeful something will click and he blooms into a star, just not as confident as I’d like to be

Yeah, with freshmen I say don't ever count on a good 3 point percentage. That just seems to be a difficult level to make a jump to.

That isn't to say you don't want them taking good three pointers, is the offense worked in to the shot you want, an in rhythm wide open clean 3.

Kiyan's problem is he takes threes that aren't that, and I'm not going to chart it, but I'd guess he's probably 35ish percent on the good looks and 10% on the bad ones.
He takes 3’s 5 feet behind the line completely out of the flow of the offense , early in the shot clock. He thinks he’s Steph Curry. People used to kill Mookie Jones for doing this but mookie actually hit them at a decent clip

It would be nice. I wouldnt be surprised if the only guy back next year is Lobdell.
Kiyan will be back, no one else will give him the leash that Syracuse does because of his last name. If he went to any other school this year he wouldn’t have seen more than 5 minutes a game

Would honestly love to see him go to Siena and come back as a Junior. But, never happening

Across all of D1? I don't think that's accurate.

Maybe so, but 95% of the other programs would have developed him far better than ours did.
