Kiyan

Melo has the resources to help Kiyan focus on gaining muscles and strength and to work on his defense. If Kiyan does his part and SU does theirs (upgraded coaching staff), Kiyan should make the leap and realize his potential.

I bet kiyan has the money to pay for these things himself. He’s a Jordan brand ambassador plus the mil plus he made from nil this year.

You can’t get more muscles. You are born with the muscles you got. You can only make the ones you have bigger

Do we think Gmac and his staff can turn Kiyan into an efficient player? He’s got a lot of raw tools and certainly needs to get stronger. But I feel like his biggest issues have been poor coaching in a poor offensive system, learning to play within the offensive structure, and lack of defensive effort.

He needs more than just strength work this summer.
He needs a lot of work on his dribbling. And he has to get faster.

I really think GMac can get a lot out of Kiyan between pushing him and Melo working with him. He’s got so much in his bag just has to get the other aspects of the game prioritized.

His ability to find and attack a driving lane is probably his one elite skill right now and finding ways to be smart about it and be a willing passer out of those opportunities along with a better more consistent shooter and improving his defense could go a long ways for him to have a much better second year.

Yeah, I don't think he did very well on the drive once we started playing better competition. He either got stripped or fouled almost every time he tried to drive the lane. I think he needs to have a much tighter handle.

be a willing passer
I think he absolutely has the IQ for this. I just think he got tunnel vision, and started feeling like he HAD to score if he wanted to stay on the floor. Of course, that took him out of the flow of the rest of the offense. But he can clearly correct this.

a better more consistent shooter

I think his stroke is very good. I just think he took too many threes from too deep. Part of this was to try to get separation from defenders who would press up on him. Again, this is where better strength, handle and quickness won't "force" him to take too many bad shots.

No question -- he has some skill.

The key for Kiyan won't just be his continued physical development, but having a coach who pushes him to play harder and expend maximum effort defensively, and to show improved shot selection. Those things will help him actualize his potential.

This past year, he flashed. But just as often, he was a ball-stopper, a high volume shot taker / low volume shot maker. He bent over to pick up loose balls, he didn't get on the floor. Etc.

Kiyan could be a very, very good college player. He just needs to be pushed. Like just about every other high potential player.

On his podcast, Melo broke down Kiyan’s game and noted where he needs to show improvement. They know the assignment for this summer.
