Just got back from Verizon Center as a guest of the ticket sales group. People invited were from alumni groups from UNC, Northwestern and Syracuse to see Harrison Barnes, John Shurna, and Kris. The talking points handed out had Barnes a projected top 5 pick, Kris a projected mid second round pick, and Shurna...the 2012 State Farm 3 point shooting champion - his prolific shooting keeps him on NBA radar!
Highlights, Kris was doing well enough at one point hitting shots that one of the marketing guys said I hope we get him, he doesn't miss. But he was only a marketing guy. Lowlight - Kris couldn't finish the 1.25 hour workout because he tweaked his groin/lower abdomen. Finished one the sidelines with an ice pack.
First 20 minutes were rotating among the 3 participants shooting standstill from different locations. Then they moved to taking shots on the move, then adding in a dribble. Worked on basic give and go stuff, first finishing off a regular layup, then a reverse. They started doing some full court things and movement without the ball to get open when the marketing rep started talking to me. I did not see when Kris stopped participating. The next thing I saw was him on the sidelines and Barnes and Shurna doing all the reps.
Overall, my impression is that Barnes is slightly more in shape/cut. The release on his shot is so much higher above his head than Kris', and everything looks effortless. But he didn't shoot lights out all the time. He had a dunk on Shurna in one of the drills that was impressive for how quickly he got to the rim and threw it down.
I can't imagine the tweak Kris had helped his stock with the Wizards (which might be ok).
Shurna has such a funky shot that you have to think he must have been such an accurate shooter in grade school/high school that no one dared mess with it. Now it just looks weird. Messed up hands and follow through.
Mostly UNC people there. They hogged the front seats until the end so I couldn't get near the window to make sure Kris saw the orange support. And the UNC folks didn't offer a welcome to the ACC or anything. My son and I had on our Syracuse shirts, so they knew who we represented.
The food offerings were pulled pork, chicken nuggets, veggies/dip, really good brownies and sodas for people that look forward to that kind of information.
