First of congrats to the seniors especially Megill, Ianzito, Cometti, Hamlin, and JoJo for willing this team to a championship game despite some major flaws. Also kudos to the rest of the team and the coaching staff, it was great to see Syracuse lacrosse back in the final four.

A few quick thoughts on the game and the season.

Obviously the X is the biggest issue and if were being honest the reason why Syracuse lost today. I am a huge Desko guy but this years performance at the X is unacceptable for a program at the elite blue bood level that Syracuse is. Let me be clear, anyone calling for Desko's head is out of their freeking mind that would be assinine. But we need to bring in a new volunteer assistant who has an extensive background at the X. SU literally won one clean draw against Duke the entire game, that is beyond abysmal. It should be clear to everyone that something has to change. The entire unit needs to be revamped, our wings are just as bad as the guys facing off, slow and seemingly unable to scoop a ground ball. Its imperative that SU bring in someone this offseason to add to the depth at the X. I dont care if its a transfer, late recruit, or a position change, the status quo isnt an option.

A couple of other quick thoughts:

Nice game by Dylan Donahue, guy is going to be a great 4 year player here. Thought Cometti played his heart out to. Rice is another guy who busted his ass, good player but hes going to have to elevate his game to another level with all of the talent coming in, ditto for Billy Ward.

Maltz was MIA today, Duke used Connors (there Sean Young) to shut down Mock and Maltz in consecutive games. A better overall offense next year should provide Maltz with more opportunities especially with Staats and Evans and others coming in.

Was dissapointed with how Schoonmaker played this tournament, he was mostly MIA and I think had maybe one goal. Ditto for Lecky, I think its time to move him to D middie, he is just to inconsistent and the playing time isnt going to be there next year with all of the firepower we have coming in.

Tough game for Lamo today, played like a beast in the 1st quarter but Dukes offense was to good for him to hold up all game. Thought he had a great year despite being a step below elite level goalie status. Will be interesting to see if Desko re-opens the competition next fall/spring. A lot of highschool all americans on the roster and another coming in, in the fall.

In the end the abysmal X play finally did SU in and to be honest I wasnt surprised. You can only play with fire for so long before you get burned. Its a testament to how good this years D was that we were able to get to the championship game despite pretty much zero X play and a lack of a true high end offense that SU is accustomed to.

A lot of positives going into next year, an unreal recruiting class coming in, hopefully getting our two transfers healthy, and a deep group of goalies and long poles. Lots of questions at short stick middie though and the X.

Jeremy - Where is a good write up on our incoming recruits? How good are they relative to the rest of the ACC?

Things Desko needs to do:

Recruit a fullback to play the X. That kid for Duke looked like he had been chomping on steroids since he was 12. He'd make a good run blocker in the NFL. Very hard to push someone like that off the ball.

Find some guys that can score on their own. The Duke players did a fantastic job of attacking the crease and scoring at point blank range. We used to have guys who could do that, but it's been a long time.

After watching this game I discovered the Danowski version of Coach K's flop. His guys attack the crease and the minute they feel contact launch themselves into it for the free shot. The first "diving goal" should have been disallowed, as the second one was. Replay shows he threw himself into the crease after minimal contact.

Our guys had a hell of a season and should be proud of themselves. Duke was clearly the better offensive team. They have so many weapons...reminded me of the SU teams of old. In the end, our offense was one dimensional; we relied on our defense to create unsettled situations for easy goals. We have to find some playmakers.

Can't wait to pay Duke back next season. Another rivalry is brewing.

Faegan go to Laxpower.com and go to the Div 1 forum section. There should be a thread titled Syracuse Recruits probably on the second or third page. The posters over there are pretty informative for the most part, the info will be a little dated depending on how long you go back but there are several breakdowns of incomign recruits on that thread. Also Inside Lacrosse will have recruiting breakdowns throughout the summer.

I think we won the 2009 title because of good Danny Brennan was at the X. I think he was number 1 in the country that year if not first he was top three. With how much talent will can recruit having 1 recruit specifically for the X each year has to be done. We lost this game from 7-7 to 13-7 without TOUCHING the ball, and that was squarely because of the X. This team was outstanding after the Albany game nobody expected to be watching SU play the biggest game of the year. I give Desko a bunch of kudos for his coaching this year, but we need to recruit a better FO guys.

Brennan was 08, in 09 we used a couple different guys including Jenkins who I think took a majority of the draws.

Jake Moulton, Gavin Jenkinson, Tim Harder, and Josh Knight.

Whatever year we beat Hopkins for the title in Foxboro was the year Brennan dominated the X. I think I have confused 2008 and 2009 because both were in Foxboro. I remember the goal he scored off the X win on a dive run into the net in the Hopkins game.

Ya Jenkinson thats it, pretty sure he took the largest shares of the draw, Harder had some decent numbers as well I think.

That was his only career goal.

Nice recap.

Had a great time at the Final Four, both sessions were really fun, and the tailgating was excellent. It is true, the college lacrosse community is special, especially the Syracuse lacrosse community. Very welcoming, very positive, very upbeat, very much into partying. If you have a chance to attend one someday, I recommend going. You won't be sorry.

I won't get into the X's and O's (though wasn't Kevin Donaghue an unbelieveable faceoff guy back in the day), but I will say that if I had my way, I would put DaJuan Coleman at the faceoff circle. He starts there from day one on my team.

If it turns out he can't win faceoffs, just instruct him to roll over the other faceoff guy and lay on him. After that happens once or twice, winning faceoffs against that guy won't be a problem any more.

X was a huge issue all year, and it is pretty amazing we advanced to the final game with that being such a glaring issue.

In fact, we nearly lost the Bryant game [what did they go, 23 out of 24 against us?] because of this. They just weren't that "good" of a team to be able to capitalize on that advantage. Similarly, against most teams, we turned them over so much it helped to offset this problem, but it came back to bite us in the NC game--hard to not feel like we were living on borrowed time given the X.

I also agree that it is 100% unacceptable to have a program at this level with such a flaw. On a positive note, if I'm a high school faceoff specialist recruit, donning Orange would be pretty attractive.

Iwonder how Mullins (if healthy) would have done against fowler giving his fball background
