Kyle McCord to NFL Draft

He needs a clean pocket. He is not as athletic as a lot of dual threat guys.

Yeah I love that stat graphic. I was really worried after the Pitt game things may change. Not exactly sure what all the staff changed following that game. I know some of the reasoning is personnel, but I was very impressed other teams after that were not able to reproduce Pitts defensive success in any way. Hats off to both Nixon and McCord for that.

I dont think it has anything to do with playing for Fran, it has everything to do with playing in a conference scouts feel is "inferior"
Yeah I certainly think the inferior conference and Syracuse despite Fran bringing up QBs in the 20th century are factors. We are not supposed to be successful as a smaller private school in the ACC. Winning recruiting battles based on relationships and not just brand name and money? Not supposed to happen anymore. Spring games? Not supposed to happen anymore. Transferring as a starter from Ohio State with an 11-1 record to Syracuse and looking better at Cuse? Not supposed to happen.

When blitzed you have a few options

1) you escape and that often leads to runs or open throws
2) you throw quick checkdown, usually short
3) the line holds up and you get 1-1s to throw into
4) you have the automatic down a sideline to your man beater

We didnt have the oline to usually deal with #3 and thats what has hurt us for years
We didnt really have the #4 to turn those into 10-20 yfs gains. Much like we used Ish with Dungey
McCord was not the crazy escape artist

That leads to number #2 and the stats back that up. Short accurate quick

He seemed to have better awareness of the pocket protection than Ward and Sanders. I watched both of them take sacks that should have been avoided.
Ward thought he could escape thus held it

Sanders liked to run backwards

Kyle knew where he wanted to go and mostly it was a matter of throwing and trust or waiting on the WR to make the decision he wanted.

He needs a clean pocket. He is not as athletic as a lot of dual threat guys.
This is a common narrative but is not backed by the data

Kyle was ranked 3rd best passing grade under pressure

Kyle was ranked 4th in lowest time to throw (gets it out quick)

He was dead middle of pack for pressure to sack ratio

Pretty good for a guy with the stigma of needing a pristine pocket

i'm a professional idiot but i wonder how much the drop in sacks can be credited to better line play and how much can be credited to Nixon's scheme

I feel like the line was pretty solid this year but mccord gets the ball out so fast too
I was so happy and proud when you went pro. I have to say that I always saw your potential. Even at an early age.

Who sees Fran as a villain?
No one in particular, more a metaphor of the media coverage. Which we’ve gotten some positive national media coverage, no denying that. However, the story of how this has come together and in a season is getting less attention nationally than it should. As I said though, we get to the CFP and even make it far or win it in the next few seasons, national media coverage will be all over the program. Just pointing out that listening to national media, the narrative so far in the offseason has mostly been about exclusivity to protect the largest brands in the SEC and Big 10 via more auto playoff spots, everything is about money in recruiting, and general takes that the top brands now are going to remain that way forever and that’s just what it is. Fran is trying to defy many of those takes by doing at Syracuse. Listening to national pundits on their takes on where things are and direction moving forward and who it involves. We are not apart of that equation.
