Hate JJ or not, he is our closest thing to a backup pg right now. And this is coming from the biggest Kiyan “told you so” member on this board. I really think NG may have to play close to 40mpg against power 4 competition to keep us in games (if JJ is out a while). I love Kiyan and do like Fennell as a prospect, but neither one has a good enough handle to man the 1 for a decent amt of time against good players. And again, I LOVE Kiyan and expect him to be our go-to guy next year, and possibly a bit this year. But for now, against real competition, he needs to be playing most of his minutes at the 2.

Luke had some jitters last night but he will be fine. He needs to just be quicker when he has the chance to be. He was trying to be slow last night and it didn’t work

I think the "ol' pull the player 35 seconds before the TV timeout" strategy with NG 1-2 times a half will let him get enough rest, and we will only need a backup PG 2-5 min a game. Our healthy guards can handle that. If we continue to force turnovers and push the ball, then PG is less important, and I think that's going to be our main offensive scheme at least for the early games.

AND - even tho Zephir, Master of the Pan Flute(tm) is supposedly just a glorified walk-on, the kid can play.

He's already 1,444% better than Carlos, because we have zero expectations for him, as opposed to trying to force minutes on somebody who isn't worthy of them.

I really think he can give us a handful of minutes now and again, if Nait needs a rest, is in foul trouble, etc.
And it's not a horrific dropoff.
He's got actual PG skills, puts effort into playing D.

So far in 11 minutes of official court time, he had 3 dimes vs 1 TO.
Plus 3 boards!!

Between Luke, Kiyan, and Bryce, we've got sufficient secondary ballhandlers if JJ can't go.

Depth is good.

Zephyr cannot play in meaningful games. Cmon now.

I’ve seen enough of JJ as the lead ball handler to know that’s not an option that will work. He has 94 assists and 93 turnovers for his career in ACC play. Fennell will be fine for 5-10 mpg.
I hope you’re right. I can’t see us finding a way to score at all, without NG on the court.

Good thing is George averaged 36 minutes a game last season and only committed 1.6 fouls per game.

Luke and Kiyan both will continue to get more comfortable on the ball. Both can use their bigger frame to shield the defender when playing more aggressive smaller defenders.

Kiyan looks fairly competent as a ball handler to me, especially for someone his height. Much better than I thought he would be. I guess we will have to see how he handles a really tough defense.

IMHO, Fennel is just not ready for minutes yet. He's probably a year away. I'd rather not create a confidence problem by sending him out there against Houston, Kansas, etc.

Fennel will help offensively when he gets to play off the ball. Not quite ready for consistent point guard minutes, but he could see time at the two or three.

I agree, we need JJ's ball handling, and especially his athleticism. George can't play 40. Fennell needs time to adjust to D1 speed, and even if that happens this year is going to have a hard time earning playing time over Anthony.

Anthony is very skilled but will most likely need some time to adjust to the speed and physicality of power 5 D1 defense. Having JJ (who thrives using his athleticism) to take pressure off Anthony will be huge. It will allow Anthony to wait until his opportunities come and often times opposing teams will put the more athetic defender on Starling allowing Anthony to use his skill to pick apart worse defensive players.

the forwards can dribble fine...donnie and sadiq can bring it up easily

the team just had only 5 turnovers without JJ

if anything, JJ is more prone to turnovers than the rest of the roster

I dont wanna see jj as PG
