Lehigh and Cornell games canceled

They expect over a million cases in the next few weeks. They are calling it a viral blizzard. Cases nearly double every three days. Unvaccinated are getting infected at an alarming rate. Testing lines in NYC are around the blocks.

We’re slowly reverting back to early 2020 over a variant that’s proven to be far weaker than anything else we’ve seen so far. The Habs are playing in front of an empty arena again, EPL may be shut down until mid-January, college hoops games getting cancelled left and right. It’s so discouraging.
Its also completely unnecessary in my opinion…but what do I know ..

I thought the whole teams were being shut down due to exposure. If not then my bad...just think at this point we need to stop quarantining healthy uninfected people and just test daily.

I might have misunderstood your post. Those testing positive do get isolated and everyone else gets tested (they are all tested regularly). But I don’t think anyone says you can’t play with a reduced roster. We played last year when Buddy was out. So since we aren’t playing now it must be more than just 1 and we’ve chosen not to play with a reduced roster.

The s. Africa data is quite encouraging.. the rise in cases has not been met with a proportional rise in hospitalizations and icu admissions .. it’s almost as if being vaccinated or having had COVID before reduces the severity of future illnesses .. for the vast , vast majority ..

Yes, apparently that is the Omicron variant. This is hopeful because it means VACCINATED people don’t become that ill. Good luck - to everyone!

FIFY.

Unvaccinated peeps are still at a much higher risk of hospitalization and death.

And those with co-morbidities or compromised immune systems.

And especially those above who are unable to be vaccinated.

I will say I’m vaccinated and my symptoms are very mild.

I’ve been far sicker before with the common cold.

I encourage people to get vaccinated so that when they do get sick, it’s as easy as it is for me.

Once everyone can get as mild symptoms as what I’m experiencing, the hospitals become less crowded.

Once the hospitals are less crowded life can continue on as normal.

Covid will not go away in our lifetimes and is eventually going to be an endemic. But as long as people resist a vaccine and hospitals continue to run close to capacity this will be the reality of the world

Also, my wife is boosted, and has tested negative several times since I was infected with Covid and she was absolutely exposed while I had symptoms. I was not boosted yet

Get the vaccine, get boosted, get back to normal

I'm sure Slick Rick can get Iona up here by tomorrow AM.

ETA: Oh it's with SU's team ... that changes that calculus.
Slick would probably still be willing.

If enough games get canceled i wonder if kids will get another season, Also i wonder if Buddy would return.

This is the situation for everyone -- rapid spread in the city right now but with all my colleagues and friends who have gotten it, it's been a mild cold. Sniffles, etc.

Vaccines work. My sister-in-law runs an ER -- all the cases requiring hospitalization (which is rapidly increasing again) are among unvaccinated folks. Same way it's been all year since vaccines have been introduced. All the anecdotes backed up by data.

Weirdly I have an actual cold right now (negative for COVID) and my symptoms are worse than anyone with COVID (who is vaccinated). It's weird to be sick again after going nearly two years...

We won’t until we accept people will get covid and treat it like we do the flu/cold.

I understand why we don’t. I have my own personal views that probably differ from many here, but I get it.

However, this is life until that happens.

Sports are simply a reflection of society.
We don't because for better or for worse flu/cold season doesn't typically require hospitals to turn away people who have other issues like heart attacks, accidents, etc... Way too many stories from people who have had relatives denied care for non-covid issues. Once covid gets to the point where it won't overwhelm hospitals we will treat it like the flu or cold.

Unfortunately for non-vaccinated people it doesn't look like Omicron will be it... or the vaccinated/preinfected it might be it.

Not a Liberty fan here, but I find it humorous how so many here did not want to play them in Football due to their handling of the pandemic.
Currently SU has 173 cases for student and staff, or .6%
Liberty has 18 (10 are staff), or .04%. With no mask mandates.

I think the NFL already did this earlier this week. Need the NBA and others to adopt the same policy and agreed - others should follow.

My understanding is what the NFL changed this week is vaccinated players that test positive and are asymptomatic only need to have one negative test vs. the prior two negatives 24 hours a part policy.

As a Browns fan, I wish it were vaccinated positives that are asymptomatic could play. As of now, the Browns have 14-15 starters out for tomorrow's critical 4:30 p.m. game against the Raiders, including both Baker currently out and their 2nd string QB, Case Keenum. Their HC and play caller, Kevin Stephanski is out as well.

It's a joke that the NFL won't postpone the game...wish the Browns would just give a big middle finger to them and forfeit.

All negative tests have to be by 4 p.m. this afternoon for any of the Browns vaccinated players to be able to play. Only one player on the Browns isn't vaccinated.

Yup. Not to mention the entire healthcare industry has been decimated by COVID after already being in bad shape. Massive shortages of staff, nurses, etc. Folks were burnt out and have all left the field (years of PE/investors buying hospitals for profits didnt help either). My SIL said years ago her PE owners eliminated free coffee for nurses...and then they wonder why they deal with shortages after treating people horrifically for years.

Sooner we can get COVID under control, the better off that entire industry can be. If folks just got vaccinated, we could move on.

Speaking for myself -- I hate playing them because they're hypocritical bigots, not because of how they handled the pandemic.

Most people I know didn't want t play them for other reasons. There are about 50 variables right now regarding covid #s , that means very little.

Why not both?

Also - I seriously doubt their reporting is entirely accurate.
They take such Liberties with reality and truth across so many other topics - why would this be any different?

unvaccinated peeps who've also had prior covid are not at a much higher risk of hospitalization and death. it's the unvaccinated with no natural immunity.

An unvaccinated 18 year old at Queensbury HS near Albany, died this week from Covid. People need to get vaccinated.

my understanding is that individual had major underlying conditions.

Thank you, good sir, for fixing me! My husband hasn’t been able to do it for 49 years.

True dat.

The problem with “natural immunity” is - you need to have had Covid, AND survived it, in order to then have that.

800,000+ Muricans could vouch** for the fact that maybe that’s not the best course of action.

** if they were alive and able to do so.
But they are dead.
