Class of 2023 LeJuan Watts (CA) Portal to Texas Tech

Is there actual interest?
The connection is that he followed Alex Kline within the past few days on Instagram. There aren’t official reports linking Watts with Syracuse but with the way Syracuse has been covertly operating in the portal, it’s more than nothing, especially because Watts follows back. It should also be noted, this was the “smoke” before the commitments for Kyle and Kingz.

Interesting. There is a "cone of silence" approach, especially as the roster is nearly complete. Watts would be a perfect fit as a do it all wing. He had a triple double and 9 double-doubles this past season.

I think Gonzaga is a player here.

I think there are probably a few teams in play (Gonzaga, Texas Tech, returning to WSU) but it’s likely a conversation was had between Syracuse and Watts (assumption based on Instagram connection). Will it result in anything? Who knows, maybe we will find out once the “dead period” ends

Instagram following isn’t exactly a definitive way to gauge interest but it is interesting to note that Kline and some of the other assistants (mainly Englestad) has tipped their hand prior to official reports coming out with our previous recruits (Kyle, Kingz and George). What is even more interesting is when there is no longer interest or player commits elsewhere, they’ve unfollowed in most cases. Based on that, it’s interesting that there is the mutual connection with Watts/Alex Kline within the past few days.

On top of that, it seems there is all this momentum for Jerry Deng but the commitment hasn’t happened. You could infer that Syracuse is looking at other options and although slightly different styles you could assume it would be Watts or Deng, not both. I’d make a decent guess that Watts would be preferable unless unavailable.

WSU’s collective is trying to put a package together for him.
Seems like they need to put their football program back together first. That’s what I’d be selling him on. Sure they’ll take care of him but who’s he playing with.

I’m enjoying your sleuthing

The prospect of stealing a talent like this who would start and then having a really talented second unit to come in… that’s with having a young but already promising second unit on paper now.

Remember the “hockey line changes” JAB did for a while with the 2012 team?

In some ways, the 2nd team may have been better than the 1st.
Certainly at SG - we had Waiters Island coming off the bench all year.
Along w Frosh MCW, CJ Fair, Southy, & Matrix.

Ah, those were the days.

Top to bottom, that was probably our most talented team under Boeheim. The late 80s and early 90s had major talent obviously, but from player 1-10 that 2012 team had the most overall talent.

We had a player named Matrix?

I'll use my shoe phone to check with Mark Few.

I say this respectfully, the teams from 1987 to 1990 had significantly more talent than 2012, which was deep, but more than that, the pieces fit so well together in ‘12.

We had four first rounders per year, a second rounder, a Parade AA and a top 30 recruit just hanging around on the bench (young players getting Boeheimed lol). That’s over a span of three amanzing seasons in the late 80s. He just did not ink the right point guard, unfortunately. It was a bit bizarre in fact, but it was the reality. Still they were amazing times.

Ah, those were the days.

With that team, I used to think that we had some second unit guys [Waiters, CJ] who were even better than the guys they replaced.

Imagine defending that team, and then Triche or Scoop comes out of the game, and the future #3 pick in the draft enters who is better. Or they sit Rak and here comes CJ.

Team was LOADED.

Freaking NCAA with Fab...

Maybe, but talent isn’t all. The Wes Johnson team was, IMO, the absolute best of JB’s tenure. Every piece fit just right.

If you watch Watts games, he could become our low post threat. He’s really good posting up and scoring on the interior. He can also knock down some threes. Excellent rebounder and passer too.
This is the kind of guy Houston keeps getting. (Like the kind of guy we expected Davis or Gurrier to be).

If we get him I would expect JJ to get 5-10 MPG at point, to make room for Kingz and Kiyan to get 25-15 at 2/3.

Unless Fennell is too good to sit, he’s the odd man out here.

Also reduces the likelihood of a Kyle/Freeman /White front line except for a few minutes per game. Definitely a commitment to small ball.
