I've seen a lot of griping about player development and wanted to know if there was any merit to it. One thing I keep reading is that these are all Dino's players now and we should be in a better place. That's a noble aspiration (I am all for it), but what no one is acknowledging is that Dino only had 5-6 weeks to polish off his first recruiting class, which had a few holdovers from Shafer's regime. Those players are now seniors, unless they redshirted.

In my mind, it really takes 6 years for most head coaches (not just Dino) to have a fully operational roster in his vision. I correlate it to the discipline of writing ... rarely is a piece ideal on the first draft. In this instance, one draft is 4 recruiting classes.

The 2019 SU Football Team is the initial draft of Dino's program. And it is not perfect. It is flawed. It is 3-4 through 7 games. He has some work to do, filling holes, restrategizing positional emphasis, etc.

Here is how I categorized his current roster (players in italics are from his initial Feb. 2016 recruiting class). To me, I see a roster that has great potential. I also think we'll need to see more development of high-level talent to remain a consistent program.

Note that there are a few players in here (Cordy/2014, Hofrichter/2015) that signed in prior to Dino's arrival in Dec. of 2015:

I don't know whether to cry or laugh when looking at this.....regardless recruiting is the life blood of a program and we have been sub par at best. Im afraid we are going to get desperate going into next season and have a huge influx of Juco Transfers. While this is a temporary band aid and may result in some wins next season our overall recruiting philosophy and game plan needs to change fast.

The OL is inept. Marrone had a much bigger rebuild. See where his line was at in year 4 and get back to me.

Tough to succeed when half of Dino’s initial class is either categorized as either a non-contributor, injured, transferred out or never arrived on campus. And I don’t blame Dino, like any coach hired in mid-December, as he is basically overseeing a salvage job at that point. Tough sledding.

If you are going to put the roster in buckets, can you make sure that bucket you put the OL starters in is full of water?

Seriously though, the names on the non-factor upper classmen list is eye opening. Lots of disappointment there.
