Too much LSU talk on the board making me uncomfortable. We need to focus on CMU or we could well be caught with our pants down.

What we know:
-They played Okie State tough week 1 , and handled Monmouth week 2 as you would expect them to do.
-Last year we won 40-3 @ their place went Hunt turned into a human cheat code.

What I see:
-Similar to Wake, they have a qb that is accurate and appears to have made that YTY jump.
-A lot of experience in their 1's. Unlike Wake we won't have guys trying to find their feet, these guys have played.
-They also have size. This will be the biggest team we've faced in the trenches as you would expect from most MAC teams

Reasons to feel good:
- They didn't run the ball well last year and that hasn't seemed to change. We defend the run well and that also hasn't changed.
- We rang their QB's bell repeatedly last year. New faces all around for Cuse but the song (scheme) remains the same.

Reasons to worry:
- Their QB can pick apart soft coverage... which we go to far too often.
- Can our DE's get to Rush against bigger/more experienced OT's? Can Big Ron play 4 qtrs as he works himself back?
- 7 vs 3 in the redzone? Hunt made sure we got in last year, can Dungey do the same?

Over simplified:
If we take care of the ball again and turn them over we should win. If we hold up in the trenches we should win. To me this looks like our toughest opponent to date in both categories. Are we up for it or is there a chance that our 2-0 team has forgotten they were 3-9 last year and have the audacity to look past a team that can very realistically beat them?

What say you my fellow Cuse fans? Has anyone had a chance to watch film on them as I have yet to have a chance to do?

I watched them play against OkState. Their O-line seems decent, much better than Wake from what I saw. Rush is experienced, but he's not the passer Wolford is. Their defense looks better than last year, but I also think OkState is overrated this year. I think we can still win this one pretty easily if our guys come out to play and aren't looking ahead to LSU. I'm thinking something like 37-10 if we come out ready to play, if not could be something like 28-17. This is a game we have no business losing.

Comparing them to Wake:

-the opening line his higher so that is good.

-we had an easier time with them last year, although we also had a healthy QB and C that game.

-last year /+ CMU was 85th while Wake was 101st

-so far this year after 2 games Wake is 93rd and CMU is 94th

I think Wake is the better team but there isn't a whole lot of difference between them and CMU. I expect a similar type of game.

Would be open a 2 score lead early on so our D can pin their ears back. If the game stays close early they could well turn it into a rock fight and try and wear us out on the d line.

Would much prefer to control the whole game against a MAC team, than having to come back like last week.

I hate playing MAC teams. Most of them are tough every other year but despite that as a P5 you get no credit for beating them and absolutely demolished in news if you do. They get hard nosed (see midwest) system guys that are solid football players and build them up for a couple years in S & C before asking much of them. I'm not expecting an easy game but hope the team proves my worries unfounded.

Good thread, as there's been too much LSU talk already this week, BUT, this sentence made me laugh:

We need to focus on CMU or we could well be caught with our pants down.

I don't really think our focus is going to matter much in the game. :D

Shafer et al seem to be decent motivators in conjunction with leaders on the team so I expect we'll be ready for CMU with a very similar approach as last week. At 3-0 against a superior team in LSU, I hope we put everything on the table. The best team doesn't always win and think we have some playmakers that could make it interesting.

I think we're going to crush them. I don't think the team is thinking about LSU. After last year they won't take anything for granted.

Probably won't be 40-3, but at least a 3 TD win.

Their QB knows what kind of defense we play. And that doesn't give him comfort. He knows we're coming after him with more than they ca block on every play.

And wait until he gets a look at how sick Thompson and Simmons looked last week.

they're getting way too much credit for oklahoma state being sloppy in game 1

Our staff is largely composed of former MAC coaches, they know what to expect and will have the team prepared. Okie State is overrated and the Big 12 still doesn't really play defense. We will be their first tough defense of the season so we have that going for us.

Their QB knows what to expect and maybe his line can give him a little breathing room, but overall, will he have improved significantly enough or is it hype? Monmouth was handled as expected, but I like to think Syracuse is a little better than Monmouth.

Besides, Monmouth shares a state with a team that shall not be named by anyone associated with the B1G, near the B1G or can spell B1G. Said team is dragging down poor Monmouth, at least that's the rumor I hear (I know I hear it because I'm starting it!).

Count me as concerned about this game. Up against a solid oline and qb with some accuracy and experience. Our secondary struggled against wake, a team with a similar skill set. We have a young qb and new offense were still installing. There is no doubt in my mind this will be a tough game and I will be ecstatic coming out of it with a win

no turnovers, no easy scores. CM has run for 70 twice so make sure that happens again. the fact they could only avg 2 yds a carry against monmouth should mean something. first road game for them, make them one dimensional and take it too them.

I'm not too worried. CMU couldn't move the ball last year and I don't see that changing this year. I will be disappointed if we don't win by 2 tds.

I'd really like to see this game be won by running the ball, saving anything too crazy for next weekend. Heavy dose of Fredricks, Morris and McFarlane and some play action on X and short.

I forgot to ask this after the Wake game: What was everyone's opinion on the option?

Was a nice change up but we didnt run it enough to force wake to really honor it. We probably should've ran the option freeze pass vs the trick play we did.

After watching both teams I think CMU is better than Wake.

We can't go run run pass punt like we did against wake. We can't hope for the one big play. We can't have 108 yards of offense in the first half and 0-6 on 3rd downs. We need to sustain drives and punch it in.

I expect cmu to have the same success as wake with the short passing game. Over the middle in the space vacated by blitzing lbs and outside to soft corners.

I think we beat CMU also but I will just point this out. CMU has a new HC and last year it was either their stud RB or WR, can't remember which, who was suspended for the game. After that he was off the team.

I was scared to death of CMU last year after we'd been lucky to beat Nova and they'd blown Purdue out of their own place, 37-17. I was utterly shocked when we won so easily. We were 2-0 then, too- and wound up 3-9. Nobody knows what is going to happen.

If our secondary plays like they did against WF this could be a loss. The difference here may be our offense playing much better in the first half than they did against WF. I remain cautously optimistic.

clean up the red zone self inflicted mistakes and instead of 17-13 its 24-17 at the half even with the shutdown of the 2nd quarter.. we showed spurts of offense but not enough consistency. you would like to think dungey makes a few less mistakes on the read and we do a better job of not hiking to the Hybrid, fix the formation mistakes as well. Wake left 10 or so on the table but we left close to 20.

Wakes D is better than CMU, hard to tell if the offenses are much different. if the Run D stays solid we can limit the damage from the passing game.

Would like to see a bit more out of the run game and less gains of 10,2,2,3 and more 4,3,5,5

the same thing holds true of improvement in game 2. this his Dungey's 2nd start. game they held back, game 2 he did more and more as the game went on. lets hope game 2 we see some more.

and like coach said back side blocking needs to get better it let 2-3 plays fall apart when the tried to go deep.
