I absolutely hated the Miami Hurricanes in the 1980s through 2001. The brash showboating arrogance made them very hate-able. But over the last 25 years as sports have increasingly become a business and players are taught PR skills to avoid any unwanted controversy, I’ve started to miss the 80s sports culture more and more. And upon reflection, I also realized while I hated Miami - I LOVED hating Miami. That emotional investment made watching so much more entertaining. I still fondly remember watching some big Hurricanes losses with my dad, with key plays burned into my memory (George Teague “The Strip” is an example).

Which brings me to these playoffs. With Miami in the ACC and me not liking Ohio State (since frankly no team is worthy of the emotional investment of hatred anymore, it’s more of a mild dislike) - I started playing the opening from the Miami 30 for 30 “It’s All About The U” any time a big play for Miami happened while watching the game with my kids. It was a way of fabricating emotional investment to make the game more enjoyable. And when Luke would say “Miami” my kids would say “U!” That carried on through to today’s game. Close to halftime today, one of my 11 year old daughter’s friends FaceTimed her. During the conversation her friend asked my daughter why she was watching the football game. My daughter said “because my dad is a big Miami fan, so we’re rooting for THE U!!!!”

If you told me 30 years ago that was a sentence my daughter would say in the future, I never would have believed it. While it’s not really true, I totally understand why she’d think that after the last month watching games…but I’m absolutely astonished that the world changed in ways that her thinking I was a Miami fan was even possible.

I have been a Miami fan ever since the original BE football conference. Syracuse, by far is my absolute favorite team though. I used to hate it when Miami would beat SU back in those days, because of the arrogance that you spoke of, where you would see some of their players jumping around on the sidelines when they made a big play, but I still rooted for them in every game that they didn't play Syracuse.
Funny how that works.

I still remember the game in the dome, when before the game, Edgerin James told a reporter that if it gets too loud in the dome that all they have to do is score a TD because that will quiet the crowd. SU put up something like 63 points on them which at the time was their worst loss ever, lol.

There was a couple of years that I tried to hate Miami because I was mad at them after they left the BE, and I even adopted USF as my second favorite team but it didnt take. Im a native Floridian, in case some of you guys were wondering why i have this affinity for Miami.

I think you're referencing the 1998 game. We put up 66. McNabb's senior day. We had 3 guys, including McNabb, run for 100+ that day.

Everyone hated The U Part 1. People disliked The U Part 2 because of Part 1. Now people want to hate The U Part 3 but have a hard time bringing up Part 1 because it was so long ago.

If Miami does not win the title, there will be a first time champ for the first time since Florida in 1996. Oregon has at least put in the work the last 25 years. Indiana would be like Baylor winning the NCAAT.

I was there. As a young kid that was probably the happiest day of my life at that point. I got a shirt that day outside the dome that said my 2 favorite teams are syracuse and anyone who beats miami. And I, oddly enough, found myself screaming and cheering for Miami last night. Life is funny.

After experiencing the feelings of 1992 and coming close in '96, breaking through in '97 and humbling them in '98 felt really good. It would have felt better had they been as good as their pre-sanction years, but it still felt really good.

I despise Miami, BUT had to root for them because them winning is better for the conference, if ACC teams get better the product gets better the tv deals may get better and the conference stays together. I think Va Tech, Cal, FSU, And several other teams will be better next year then were this year. I’m most worried how Syracuse is going to improve!

I loved Miami when I was a kid. Their 2001 team is the GOAT. They got absolutely screwed by the refs against Ohio State the following year. Beating them last year was up there with 6OT, 2014 Duke, and 2003 Pitt/Notre Dame games as far as live SU wins. I can't stand them, but also think college football is fun when they're good/great and it's nice seeing a non "Power 2" team beat the SEC and B1G. Wish Texas Tech could have played a little better and cheered them on, too.

My dislike of Miami has definitely diminished since the BE days. Probably because we dont play them as much anymore and they have been fairly mediocre since they joined the ACC. I don't like them but I don't hate them either.

I find myself really disliking Ohio St and especially Michigan lately. Arrogant fan bases. One of my wife's best friends is from Michigan and her husband is a super obnoxious Michigan fan. Every time we talk football and I mention SU, he gives a snide comment and starts talking about Michigan. Can't stand them now.

I dont get the i root for conference foes. I mean did anyone root for georgetown when they were in the ncaa finals 3 years in a row? Why the hell would i root for a school i despise?
Im not rooting for Miami either, I don’t care who wins frankly. Just commenting on your gun to your family’s head

Efffffffff Miami. Trash fans from the sewer who have done nothing but hate on us for last two years. But it was cool to see them take down OSU. Wish they lost last night and hope they get destroyed in the finals.

Agreed. We're only rooting for them out of insecurity for our future. That's some pretty weak stuff.

Conference strength was much less of a thing back then.

Haven’t liked the U since 1984 flutie. My first love affair w college football

92 game watched w curiosity
94 game loudest moment ever for me in the dome when Conley int (saw phish night before at war memorial)
96 heartbreaking
97-98 payback
01- drunk at the beacon hill pub left in second quarter . Best team I’ve ever seen

I personally find it fairly easy to sort of root for Miami on this run. They don't bother me and they're in the ACC. I also live in Florida (not sure if that means anything). Against Ole Miss though, I was conflicted. In a way, I wanted the Ole Miss players to be able to give Kiffin the big middle finger.

I hated both, back in the day. Now, it's our mercenaries and one-year rentals against their mercenaries and one-year rentals. It doesn't give rise to the same emotions. I'm sick of the ACC being the least of the power conferences. I'll be pulling for Miami in the final.

That said, I wouldn't root for Georgetown if my kid was on the team!

Conley had an int in the '92 game. Did he have another in '94?

I would deny I had a kid, if they were on that team.

Yeah…last night was unusual. Do I root for the ACC team that I’ve hated for three decades? Or do I root for the SEC team - where I despise the entire conference and all the fan bases - since their coach left them for another SEC school? While I was conflicted, ultimately the fact I’d gotten my kids rooting for Miami during this playoff run carried me through. Although part of me really, really wanted that Hail Mary to be caught - because that ending would have been a miracle ending to an amazing game.

The worst boss I ever worked for was a Michigan grad and season ticket holder who would fly back for all their game. I haven’t worked for that POS for over twenty years…but I still have his phone number (and know it’s still his).

It’s taken an ungodly amount of restraint and discipline on my part to not blow up his phone with Moore memes. I’ve settled for enjoying the whole mess knowing with certainty he’s despondent over it. Screw Dave, and screw Michigan.
