LOL ESPN.com top story

SU's win was leaps and bounds better than UK's win at Vanderbilt. It's jealousy, that is all.

"It was an ugly win for Syracuse, but that doesn't make it any less impressive for a flawed Orange team, writes Brian Bennett. "

what a bad sentence that is. translation - Flawed Syracuse impresses with ugly win?

it used to be that syracuse's flaw was they don't win on the road. now when they beat top 20 teams on the road, it shows their flaws because they didn't win by enough

You just don't understand. It's like figure skating, style points are everything. We just didn't land the double axle triple toe loop in this game. Our articles are written by figure skating judges.

Haters gonna hate.

ESPN should never be confused with a "news" outlet. They talk about the events they cover and too hell with the other stuff.
At this point, there is no better outlet for sports. I sincerely hope this changes once CBS gets their new sports channels up and running.

ESPN thought that Louisville was too close to Syracuse to call it an actual road game for the Orange.

ESPN may have an agenda, but people outside of ESPN do not buy into the nonsense. Most fans respect Syracuse and are to the point of hating Duke and UNC. Neither plays the tough schedules everyone pretends they play - reminiscent of UFlorida in football playing FSU and a couple SEC games and claiming the best schedule so they must play for the NC all while refusing to play any non-SEC team outside of Florida.

Fans are not fooled and Gottlieb has the IQ equivalent to his shoe size. Most people are cheering for the Kentucky Kitty-Kats, Orange, Kansas, Mich. St., anyone but Duke/UNC. Everyone also realizes that the ACC has no depth even though ESPN has been hyping Miami, VATech and FSU as real basketball teams (all have been decent at times, but never contenders).

These are just my observances of fans outside the ESPiN Zone...

We are so terribly flawed that despite maybe the worst jump shooting performance in school history we still won a BE game on the road against a top 25 team that has beaten us 7 straight times. If that is flawed I will take it all day long.

...all day, every day, and twice on Sunday...

my basic perception of the problem for espn or any sport's outlet's "analysis" (tv or radio) is that what they used to cram into one hour of sportscenter every night they now have to stretch into 8 hours of talking head airtime. the actual sport's news in itself could all easily be contained on the back of a single cocktail napkin so what we now get is the same 30 second story retold 30 different ways by 30 different "experts". of course espn spins it for effect. it's their paycheck.

Sometimes I wonder how annoying the SU guys are at ESPN and if that has anything to do with some of the jabs? I did think it was kind of funny that the SU/Louisville was called a poor offensive display but no mention like that for the Kansas/KState game which also was in the 50's.

this is true whether one takes the time to realize it or not. Bilas for example, and I love Bilas as the more recent Bilas is one of the fairer ones, but....

If someone has the immediate post game of the 2003 NC the first thing he says and goes on and on about was not how SU won and is deserved but how KU lost it. Went on and on. It is what it is fellas. Grin and bear it I guess.

Most important piece of this column to me is this:

"Yet the Orange -- who have a very real chance of heading into the Big East tournament at 30-1 -- displayed admirable grit and poise in a challenging environment on Monday night. Their very real weaknesses might not be enough to offset their many strengths. "

That's how I look at it, and that's pretty much how any rational fan is going to look at it.

Take off the Orange-colored glasses. Do you guys even read the articles? You could argue that the article was a backhanded compliment, maybe.

But, the article essentially said that DESPITE our many glaring weaknesses-- you'd have to be an idiot not to recognize them yourself-- we still find a way to win. You quoted the article and stopped right before the main point of the article:

"Yet here's the undeniable good news for the nation's second-ranked team. The Orange found a way to trudge through a defensive morass and pull out the 52-51 victory -- their 26th win in 27 tries this season -- against one of the hottest clubs in the Big East."

AND... further down at the end...

"Yet the Orange -- who have a very real chance of heading into the Big East tournament at 30-1 -- displayed admirable grit and poise in a challenging environment on Monday night. Their very real weaknesses might not be enough to offset their many strengths."

Is Bennett slobbering over us? No. No-one could accuse him of lifting us too high.

But... he didn't say, or suggest, that we don't deserve to be #2. He didn't say or suggest we were a paper tiger. He didn't say or suggest that we'll be out of the tournament quickly this year.

Read the article again. It might not be the best compliment in the world, but it's not a hatchet-job. In fact, I can't find anything in it that isn't accurate.

If Written by a UL grad, That surprises me.

1. UL have always said stay classy. Every game they come here congratulate us on a hard fought game. The last 10 games atleast one fan has. This time they lose one and 0 fans do.

2. JB taught Pitino how to play zone you would think they would have extra respect for us.

It just really surprises me.

3. Our team needed big time work on defense. Teams were getting to much ball movement. JB probably worked really hard on that in practice on Sunday. We just got through playing Uconn two days ago and the game before Gtown. Thats three tough games to prepare for. You want to prepare for each team different ways and we played all three games in like 5-6 days. We get people like This and Gottlieb criticizing us really?

We just played Gtown, Uconn and @Lville back to back in 5-6 days and wne all three. Seriously?g

I didn't mind the press to this point now I do. They are getting alittle to personal. They need to keep their mouths shut and let our record speak for itself.

When you're a top team this happens all the time. They build ya up to tear you down. SU does have flaws but I do believe that their strengths will offset their weaknesses. But that said the madness is a crapshoot at times and I'll never forget the T Roberts got against Vermont, you never see that hanging on the rim call and to do so that late in close last minutes NCAA game, ouch.

Another writer that thinks if you don't get 1,000 angry emails/snarky comments calling you an idiot, you're not doing your job.

Not worth caring about.

Honestly not sure its a conspiracy, but I think ESPN legitimately likes to rile this fanbase for a reaction.

The one thing that bothered me from last night, postgame when they went back to the studio the host (goofy southern guy, no idea what his name his) referred to JB as "Boeheim" 3-4 times on air. Just struck me as wrong with no "Coach" no "Jim", etc. ...you think he would ever refer to K like that? Roy Boy? Calimari? even Pitino?

When will everybody get it? ESPN backed the Bernie Fine accusers. ESPN is team Davis. They went all in. Turns it out it was not as big a story as they thought.

Now the awkward part is not only did ESPN not drag us down (like they secretly wanted since that would have brought the schadenfreude angle) but we're one of the top 2 teams in the country. ESPN producers have had conversations about this. How will they talk about us? It seems they decided that rather than pump us up and get a "dickrider" bandwagon reputation, they will keep a distance from us and have the "analysts" knock us down.

The analysts are ESPN producer mouthpieces. They spew the storylines that ESPN wants to push through the guise of "analysis". It's actually brilliant, but extremely shady in my eyes. ESPN has an AGENDA. They are not AP and they are not reuters who at least claim to be unbiased. They are a corporation who is concerned about its own interests.

At this point I feel complaining about what ESPN says shows an inability to grasp the concepts I mentioned above. If we win the NC they will still find a negative. This never ends. As soon as the buzzer sounds it won't be like a movie's happy ending where the bad guys put their heads down and say congrats to the winner. The negativity will continue.

The Bernie Fine story has many different egos wrapped up with it. We will be the red headed stepchild of ESPN for many years until there is new management at ESPN, regardless of how many championships we win. Tough ****. Have some equanimity about this crap. I have.
FWIW, I think ESPN.com has made a decision to portray the hoops program if not in a negative light, in as least positive a light as possible. Compare the coverage we get on ESPN.com to si.com or Yahoo sports and the narratives are completely different.

I'm fairly certain that's only because they haven't figured out where this board is yet...a few have posted on the old board after the game.

This. Let's face it, if you're one of the guys that green lighted the story, and now you're watching the circus it's become, you gotta wonder if your career is on the line. I'd probably be doing the same thing they're doing, projecting that fear that their career is going to go up in smoke over a bogus story that many thought they could MAKE their career on and maybe win a Pulitzer, and taking it out on the coverage of Syracuse. Don't think it's a conscious thing or a conspiracy, just the ugly side of human nature rearing it's head.

Not a conspiracy theorist, but remember that the Big East begins negotiations this fall for a new ESPN TV deal. It would behoove ESPN to diminish the Big East ratings as much as possible and increase other ratings as much as possible to strengthen their negotiating power.

On SC this morning, Dougie got a little heated, saying the Knicks will not be worse upon Amare's return, but will be worse upon Melo's. The host and other commentator with the bow-tie (names escaping me) had condescending looks on their faces like "you're joking, right?"

If this was a factor, I'd expect the opposite: build up the teams that are leaving so that their games show a demonstrable bump in the ratings compared to other BE teams. Then use the loss of those teams as the basis of their negotiations.

Media types on the board can weigh in, but I don't think any network is going to tank any ratings like teams gunning for a #1 draft pick. They also have to consider the input (advertiser dollars) along with the output (conference contracts). Ratings are watched too closely and on such a real-time basis that those in charge during the conspiracy (if true) might not be around by the fall negotiations.
