Looks Like No Arena For Now

I don't think she's out of line but she does seems petty. I don't even want a new stadium though so I hope she blocks it. Still, this isn't a situation where a pro sports team blackmails a city or state (hey Bills!). Syracuse University isn't moving anywhere.

Agreed, SU isn't going anywhere so let's hold them for ransom and make it as difficult as possible for them to embrace and become a part of the community even though we all know that a new stadium is necessary in the near future.

Let them build it themselves somewhere with alternate donations and financing on their own land so they can further distance themselves from the Syracuse community and city.

...Did I forget to use the sarcasm font...damn!

Me personally, I am the type that only asks for something once and when/if I don't get it, I will not ask again. I honestly, even though the new Chancellor said otherwise, wouldn't be surprised if SU very quietly started distancing themselves from cooperation with the city in the future.

Miner has the remainder of her term left but is willing for her own ridiculous reasons to jeopardize the next 30 years of this city's future as well as relationships with SU, the Governor, County legislature, etc.

Strike while the iron is hot and when the Governor has been itching to spend money upstate. Wow, just wow.

she is wary of something that sounds too good to be true.

miner hasn't done or said anything that would kill this

when someone is trying to sell you something that sounds too good to be true and the deal only holds if you sign right now, you should be skeptical

McMahon "It's a complex partnership for a regional project that requires state and county funds as well as working with Syracuse University and a private owner-operator,'' McMahon said. "It also would require some support from city hall. And there's been to date a lack of enthusiasm for the project from city hall.''

So Miner is a roadblock because she wants to understand a complex partnership and because she wants to know specifically what "some support from city hall" means?

Why is it to good to be true? Were you in the briefings?

Maybe she is just too stupid to get it.

Does it seem like she was even interested in this. Instead of lack of enthusiasm why wasn't the approach "sounds great, here's my concerns, but if this holds I'm all in".

Why would you approach it with a negative attitude at all?

speaking of stupid, all this bullsh!t about lack of enthusiasm is really stupid.

we could do something really great but you're not enthuuuusiastic enough so no thanks. this is just dumb posturing that appeals to suckers

due diligence isn't negative.

what does "support from city hall" mean?

You have no idea what Miner is like, do you. Sounds just like her.

Guess what genius, saying sounds goods and let's go forward isn't a commitment for life. It allows you to do the due diligence phase. There are a bunch of gates on projects like this that if doesn't hold together will shut it down before one shovel full of dirt is turned over.

The condition the state put on the stimulus money, if OE is right about it, and by the way Federal Stimulus money is free money at this point, it's already been appropriated, if it's not spent here it will be spent elsewhere, is that it had to be spent for economic development in an urban area. The availability of that funding can be time sensitive, that's why the urgency to get it committed.

Obviously there would be services that would need to be provided during big events, but guess what, that one of the fundamental jobs of the city and they are already providing.

The city is not involved in the funding package so any concerns about ownership, naming rights, funding structure are none of her business.

Here is the extent of her legitimate concerns:

1) What infrastructure work would need to be done and if needed, who would be expected to pay for it?

2) Is the City expected to provide any property tax breaks?

That's it.

Great summary. Miner is either really inept or is obstructing any forward movement for political reasons. Saying we can cautiously move forward is not a total commitment to the project which still needs more definition. Gotta start somewhere and when you do, for obvious reasons, not all answers are in place at the start. To get the answers, you agree to discuss it and iron things out. You can't expect someone to deliver a book of all answers when this project is simply a concept.

I disagree with your premise.
Near future might be a little much, but honestly none of us know the real structural condition of the dome and how many useful years are left. One thing that makes sense in doing it now, availability of state funding and the cost of replacement now versus the future. Also does anybody know how much the Dome costs to maintain on an annual basis. I think it comes out of the athletic budget. That costs could be increasing and the savings of not owning a bullding like the dome versus being the major tenant could make sense financially for SU

That's a big "that's it"

You make it seem like no big deal because there's only two things on that list

even though those two things are how much money is she going to have to shell out and how much money is she not going to collect.

Aside from money coming in and going out, there are no concerns at all!

just because 500 million dollars falls out of the sky doesn't mean Miner can afford any small fraction of that in terms of tax breaks and infrastructure work.

one thing i like thinking about because I'm weird is whether I could afford to live in mansions near where i live if they were given to me for "free". I couldn't. Taxes and house "infrastructure" would bankrupt me. That's how i think about this

smart people make stupid arguments when they're the special interest

Do people think if the Mayor said great idea let's move forward that shovels would be in the dirt starting in April. This has a long way to go, I think to Go's point is you present a more positive tone and And start the process for no other reason than to get the ball rolling and get the funds appropriated. Details will come, but the most important thing on a project like this is to get the ball rolling. There will be plenty of time to make a stink about the details later down the road. Still a million reasons why the project can killed. I think it was short sighted on her part and her questions quite frankly were not needed to be answered now.

So, we don't know the urgency (or lack thereof) of the current situation. And, you and I don't need to be informed. But, if you want to build public support for such a major undertaking, it might be a good idea to be more transparent about the process.

Remember, the new Chancellor stated earlier in the week that renovation was an option.

I would imagine this would have come out in a formal press conference.

what i'm saying is who gives a about her tone

People who are elected should care about tone.

People who are elected should care about tone.
the people who think this is a great idea should be livid about state and county walking away from this because miner isn't sufficiently giddy

i don't believe any of it.

DING DING DING.

My older brother was installing tile as the mall was opening and people were walking on it. Most ridiculous construction project ever. Congel hosed a lot of companies on that project and put them under.

He may be a hardnosed businessman but that's why his networth is what it is.

The city messing up the inner harbor development was a bigger mistake then this new arena debauchery

Minor did not want Basspro to anchor the inner harbor. COR wanted housing and smaller retail stuff for whatever reason.Maybe COR is afraid of doing battles with big strong corporations who might want to have a little more say in any development that goes on down there.:noidea:

I wonder what all those NYS taxpayers, who complain about high taxes, and are concerned about big government, have to say about this.

it's a lot of state aid she won't get for anything else
she's on her own for everything else. without the stadium, maybe she gets more aid for stuff she's going to have to do anyway. personally i'm sick and tired of all this state aid, as if the aid comes from some other planet or something.
the more cuomo doles out to one, the more he has to dole out to all and everyone ends up paying more.

How did the city mess up the Inner Harbor development? The state owned the land and put out RFPs a few times but didn't get anyone to bite. Miner went to the state, specifically the Thruway authority because they're in charge of that land and asked them to transfer it to the city so she could try and do something on her own. And she did.

As much as people might not like Miner and believe me she is difficult to like, the Inner Harbor is doing quite well now under her watch.

I agree that she needs to get on board with the arena project to at least move it forward. The money is there, take it and then work on the logistics.

There is more to it than we're being told.
