Looks like Smith and Hickey are leaving

The certainty of that statement makes it sound like you were personally in the meeting room with Marrone & Hackett when those decisions were made. Maybe you were. So, Who were you going to play at QB?

Nothing like that, but it's solid.

He got a waiver.

That usually means a bad thing when it comes to sports.

Nice to have Gulley back for another year, let's hope he can stay healthy and take advantage of it.

I don't know what the issue with Funderburk is but Marrone and Hackett were going to have Funderburk and Flemming at WR and West in the Slot. Hunt would have been at safety.

your saying they were giong to move terrell hunt to safety?

IMHO Smiths draft stock has peaked and will only start going down from here on out. He should leave. Deandre Smith and McDonald have hitched their wagons to the youngsters. They both will be a lot more involved in the O next season. That can only mean Smith and PTG's carries will be even less. I guess that is if the staff hasn't had a change of heart since their expectations at the beginning of the season

RBs are a dime a dozen in the nfl.. dozens hanging around trying to get back in. he isnt a 3rd down NFL guy, he isnt a home run threat, he doesnt make people miss and he cant get to the corner in college ball. Is he really going to get drafted? does he go ahead of where Carter did in the 4th round?

Loeb bridge to Zach Allen would be my guess.

Really? I wouldn't think Hunt is fast enough to play safety.

West at slot sums up the problem I mentioned the other day. Too many slot guys on this roster, not enough outside guys. Especially with Flemming out again, and Funderburke being a Scooby Doo level mystery.

If he has one more real season to play ball, then why should he leave. Kid is a very good college back.

Because you go when your stocks the highest?

Stock for what, to be a undrafted free agent, or at best end of the draft pick. Why trade one more year for that.

If Smith can find a team that opens holes pretty well he could be a helluva back. He needs a push from them or holes...yes I know most backs do but imo he isn't the best at reading the line.

He was projected 5-7, if he has NFL aspirations (and he does), IMO his stock would go down to ufa since he would be less involved in the O next season. Yes I realize some might think of it as splitting hairs. But it still seems to me you go when your stocks the highest even if the margins are slim. And especially if your role will be further diminished.

Smith should have left last year. I don't think he figured the new staff would reduce the role of their best back.

So a player who is a legit NFL prospect is going to see his PT cut on a .500 team that has run the ball the best it has in 10 years with him as the #1 back.

Yeah, that makes sense.

This couldn't be more accurate

Yeah, it's already happened

He's down 2.5 carries a game. I have no problem with Morris and MacFarland getting snaps. I did think the in for one play and out was a bit much against Pitt, he was getting very good production with the quick hitter and zone read. The stretch and the sweep not so much.

Smith's stock is high? He's had an average year. I just don't see him making an NFL roster. Ever.

Not what I said. I said, you go when it's the highest. Which would've been at the end of last year. But my point is, it's only going to go down from here, so if there's a chance he's got to go now. I didn't say my opinion, my statement was based on draft prospect position sites, and the feedback he got from his evaluation last season. I was leaving it up to the pundits. My opinion is he'll go to a camp and get cut, but that's just me.

This assumes he has some belief he will make the pros and some aspiration to do so and believes he'll get less carries and yards next year. If he doesn't, it makes sense for him to come back to the extent he can play another year in College as the team captain and run for 1,000 yards and end up SU's 3rd or 4th largest career rushing yards total.

If he fights for The #1 spot I see no problem with that. Every team will have guys that aren't made for the top spot, but settle in nicely as secondary options. Having an experienced receiver in ther as a 2 or 3 is not a big deal, quite frankly that is a good thing. There are true freshman around the country who come in immediately and they are the guy. It is called good recruiting. If we get there soon I would be a very happy man. If West were to leave over fear of competition for the #1 spot it would be very short sighted. He is the type that could thrive with the attention being pulled away from him.

And the trouble with this is that you end up with a 5th year senior as your #3 receiver when a frosh could fill that slot with as much or more talent and get better for the experience so that the following year the now sophomore has the experience to do even better. If you have a senior who has failed to progress and failed to step into the #1 spot well this year and he comes back as a 5th year senior and slides down into the #3 role due to 2 true freshmen being better than he is, I don't know that you want that guy around from an attitude standpoint and from a taking space and experience away from others that will continue to help you the following year.
