Looks like Smith and Hickey are leaving

This assumes he has some belief he will make the pros and some aspiration to do so and believes he'll get less carries and yards next year. If he doesn't, it makes sense for him to come back to the extent he can play another year in College as the team captain and run for 1,000 yards and end up SU's 3rd or 4th largest career rushing yards total.
Yes, I believe he has beliefs he will make the pros and the aspiration, unless there's been some dramatic change in that. I'd give him 0% chance of gaining 1,000 yds next season. So you think he's going to be more involved in the O next year?

And the trouble with this is that you end up with a 5th year senior as your #3 receiver when a frosh could fill that slot with as much or more talent and get better for the experience so that the following year the now sophomore has the experience to do even better. If you have a senior who has failed to progress and failed to step into the #1 spot well this year and he comes back as a 5th year senior and slides down into the #3 role due to 2 true freshmen being better than he is, I don't know that you want that guy around from an attitude standpoint and from a taking space and experience away from others that will continue to help you the following year.

To question his attitude is harsh. Whats to say he doesn't fill the role and work as hard as he has in the past. And he is the best option at the #2 or #3 regardless of class you play him. Your post assumes that there would be a guy who was of equal or better talent whose role he would be taking. You never turn down a player who has been with the program and has contributed from coming back. If he was a cancer or a train wreck on the field I would get it. You need to win games next year, not sacrifice performance to get younger guys experience.

Well that's happened this year at the rb position.

Haven't read the whole thread and not sure if this has been cleared up. At the beginning of the season those guys asked to walk on senior day even though they are listed as Juniors because they want to walk with the players they came into the program with. It was decided a long time ago, before a game was even played. They all have one year of eligibility left, and only PTG has announced his decision to return next season. The others have not yet decided, and the decision to walk on senior day has no bearing on what their decision may ultimately be. Since PTC announced he is returning he decided it was not right to walk on senior day.

Maybe smith is walking, because he IS leaving...and will play next year for 'Insert real big program in need of a top rb'.

Where's that coming from?

Can't blame him if he did.

You mean you're not sold on Brandon Jacobs and Peyton Hillis? :p

I think he means pull the Russel Wilson move, or Drew Allen for a closer to home version.

So Smith is good enough for the Giants but not for Syracuse University, at least according to some.

This might be crazy but could it be that Jerome has asked to limit how much he gets beat up, worried about injury? Does the NFL worry like Marrone did about HS RB's that have "too many miles on them" or is it a moot point for the NFL? I certainly don't know the young man and definitely not judging but he's averaged a little over 16 carries a game this year. Against Maryland he had the most carries he did all season , 28 and then the next game against FSU he had his lowest, 5 carries, still averaging the over 16 carries a game. Hope it's not a dumb question, I apologize if it is, I readily admit I'm far from an expert on football.
