Luke Carney

lol. He’s wrong all the time. He wanted Collins over Angeli in the preseason. He’s a hot take artist.
So in other words he wasn’t all that far off from what the coaches were saying at the time about a very close competition at qb. I think this started off with a very personal diatribe (not by you) against Axe for saying we can’t trust what Fran says regarding Carney. That went too far for my taste but there are literally dozens of posts over the past three weeks saying folks can’t figure out what Carney’s situation is.

It's either a strange decision, or we have to believe that up until the very point that Fran reopened the QB competition that Carney had shown more, and had more investment in practice priority in the program up until then, at which point Filardi suddenly overtook him and appeared to realize his potential at just the right time.

It's not great admitting it but it's much more likely the staff made a stupid decision than to believe Filardi's development timeline relative to Carney's happened to shake out the way it did. On a short week, at that.

My new conspiracy theory is that Nixon was never on board with the kind of QB Carney is, but it wasn't supposed to matter because Nixon was going to move on after this season when his son is done, and the likelihood of having to dip down to QB3 seemed so low at the start of the season.
It might just have something do with dynamics beyond football ability.

The only possible reason behind all of this that makes sense to me is that Carney has told Fran that he is hitting the transfer portal at his first opportunity. And who could blame him?
I don’t get this take. Why should he be in such a hurry to leave?

and we have a winner
It seems the chances of this being a chicken and egg thing is pretty high, assuming he has said he's transferring.

Did Carney voice intent to transfer first, and that changed how the staff used him, or did how the staff has used him lead him to decide to transfer?

Yes. Definitely yes.

a) He’s from Texas, and we have a REALLY low success rate in keeping kids from Texas. Not sure exactly why (although I have my suspicions), but the fact remains that of the few Texas kids we land, most transfer out pretty quickly. The only exception I can think of in recent memory is Koda Martin, and it’s hard to enter the portal when you live in the head coach’s basement.
b) He knows he’s got no shot as long as Angeli is here, which looks like through 2027. Angeli wasn’t on the roster when he signed, so he may have thought he had a clearer shot at starting this year or next.

A+B= He Gone

so the kid doesn't have a shot and doesn't want to learn from a player that was leading the country in passing, hate to break it to anyone but he isn't starting next year for any p4 school. if in fact he wants to redshirt over helping his team then I don't really care about him and schools will take that into account when he's in the portal and accepts an offer from some small school no one cares about.

If as one report after the press conference stated, the object was always to redshirt Luke, then maybe that's why he hasn't played much. He might be their plan for the future and don't leave him in to get hurt or overwhelmed in a loss.
That's possibly what's happened with Rickie, and they don't want another QB to go down that road.

Gill is from Texas

Fran is different from most coaches. He thinks outside the box. I think him giving these freshmen playing time is a tool he uses to attract talent that we normally aren’t in the Conversation for.

He also wants to keep them. Guys aren’t going to wait 2-3 years to play anymore.
