Luke Carney

At this point I hope Fran starts Carney at QB the last three games of the season to get him some experience and save his redshirt year.

Collins will leave if he is benched and Carney can battle Angeli for the starting job in 2026. If Angeli wins the job we will have an experienced backup QB for two years and then Carneyntakes the reigns in 2028.
You also showcase him to other schools if he plays well. If he’s successful, you think he wants to wait behind Angelli for two more years? I doubt it.

He would get more in NIL here vs 90% of G6 schools.

If he is good enough to get a P4 offer then he is good enough to beat out Angeli here.

If he is any good he is leaving anyway. Might as well use him now instead of never.

okay so to your point... WE don't know if Carney is ready or not. The staff knows. Let's say he's not and let's say he's behind Rickie... what's the answer? You don't play Carney for the hell of it. You can't tank for draft picks.

NIL money plays a role I am sure... but I trust Fran that he's playing the best QB possible at this moment. I just hope Rickie turns it around... but I am not opposed to Carney if it makes sense
I think the portal is influencing coaches to play freshmen more- even at QB. Obviously some of these players were highly ranked coming out of high school. But the constant reality that these kids have options may be influencing coaches to get talent on the field and get the most out of it while they can. Fran has obviously shown a willingness to play freshmen. I think if these struggles continue with Rickie, Fran will play Carney.

I think with the portal, Fran Brown will always seek to bring in transfer QBs who fit our system.

They will also continue to bring in HS quarterbacks every year, to see if any of them pan out. If they don't, then the portal enables the coaching staff to bring in guys ready to step in and start -- like McCord and Angeli.

And if a developmental HS player like Carney / Lott in the class of 2026 pan out and emerge, then disco. That guy becomes the starter for a season [or 2, or 3], and we don't HAVE to bring in a portal QB for a couple of years.

And if they don't, then they'll cycle out [probably, unless they choose to stay] and open up a scholarship for the staff to use.

No downside to either approach. With our offense, and with what McCord did and what Angeli was on his way to doing, QBs can put up video game numbers here. That is going to be attractive. And the fact that Angeli was also leading the nation in passing yardage despite playing some higher level opponents mean that it wasn't just about McCord. That our system is the driver. Lots of QBs will want to sign up to be the next in line to produce at that level.

And every once in awhile, you'll strike gold with a HS QB. If a guy like Carney ends up being a great system fit with all of the right intangibles, then he'll be handed the keys. If not, instead of it being something that hamstrings the program, it is an easily fixable speed bump corrected by the portal.

By all accounts, Jakhari Williams is a great kid, and intelligent person, a leader, and a solid citizen. There was no downside to bringing in this type of QB prospect, to see if he develops. And if he -- or other subsequent HS QBs that we land -- don't show the potential the staff is looking for, then it isn't an impediment.

Everyone keeps referencing Angeli getting 2 more years but I'm not sure he will get a medical redshirt. I'm guessing he doesn't. To get a medical redshirt you have to have played in 30% or less of the seasons scheduled games. Pretty sure the bowl game is not a factor in that calculation. He played in 4 games which is 33.3% of scheduled games.

If he is that good he can help us now, that is the priority for this year.

30% of 12 games = 3.6 games (rounded up to 4 games).

Angeli played in 4 games. It's a non issue.

Problem is, Angeli redshirted in 2022. He needs the waiver to get a 6th year of eligibility.

Fran didn't think the waiver would be a problem.

If Carney doesn't play this year, what programs are going to give him a better opportunity than here? I don't think Angeli gets 2 more years. I think its 1.

If Angeli only gets 1 year, and Carney doesn't play this season, he will fight it out for QB1 next year and likely be QB2 with 3 more years to play after Angeli leaves. If Carney does play and plays pretty well, then next year he competes with Angeli for QB1 in 2026. If he wins it he has 3 years at QB1. If he loses he is QB2 and redshirts, playing only in 4 games. Then has 3 years to be QB1. Only way he possibly leaves is if he play very well and gets a better more likely opportunity to be the starter at another P4 program. Does that happen? maybe?? But if he looks that good he could beat out Angeli coming off injury. We don't owe Angeli anything. We may go with Carney who has 3 more years in that situation.

From what I googled last week, AI gave me an answer that they don't round up. 4 games is over the 3.6 requirement. But AI could be wrong.

It has been 4 games for as long as I remember.
Yes i know standard redshirt has always been 4 years. Medical i was unsure. But with a new different search on football medical redshirts I am not getting just the 30% answer I got last week. Looks like participation limit is: Cannot have competed in more than 30% of contests or 4 games in football (whichever is greater).

And even if Fran has reservations, that shouldn't stop from giving him a couple series each half just to see what happens. There should be no loyatly to Rickie. HE has not proven or earned anything based on his play. McCord and Angeli had varying degrees of equity built in. Ricky doesn't.

How does Rickie not if McCord an Angeli did?

They are all transfer qbs coming her and Rickie at one point was announced to be out starter?
