Luke Carney

I think with the portal, Fran Brown will always seek to bring in transfer QBs who fit our system.

They will also continue to bring in HS quarterbacks every year, to see if any of them pan out. If they don't, then the portal enables the coaching staff to bring in guys ready to step in and start -- like McCord and Angeli.

And if a developmental HS player like Carney / Lott in the class of 2026 pan out and emerge, then disco. That guy becomes the starter for a season [or 2, or 3], and we don't HAVE to bring in a portal QB for a couple of years.

And if they don't, then they'll cycle out [probably, unless they choose to stay] and open up a scholarship for the staff to use.

No downside to either approach. With our offense, and with what McCord did and what Angeli was on his way to doing, QBs can put up video game numbers here. That is going to be attractive. And the fact that Angeli was also leading the nation in passing yardage despite playing some higher level opponents mean that it wasn't just about McCord. That our system is the driver. Lots of QBs will want to sign up to be the next in line to produce at that level.

And every once in awhile, you'll strike gold with a HS QB. If a guy like Carney ends up being a great system fit with all of the right intangibles, then he'll be handed the keys. If not, instead of it being something that hamstrings the program, it is an easily fixable speed bump corrected by the portal.

By all accounts, Jakhari Williams is a great kid, and intelligent person, a leader, and a solid citizen. There was no downside to bringing in this type of QB prospect, to see if he develops. And if he -- or other subsequent HS QBs that we land -- don't show the potential the staff is looking for, then it isn't an impediment.
Great thoughtful post, captures a lot of the nuances of the circumstances involved here. I think Fran will be loyal until it just simply doesn’t make sense anymore, meaning your loyalty to the whole of the team and program starts outweigh the loyalty to the one kid playing qb.

He will have given him every possible opportunity, which is probably another two games, unfortunately. As If it was up to me, he would get to start this next weekend and if he doesn’t produce in the first half then time for the youth movement.

If the new kids do not pan out, meaning playing one or both for two or three games before you blow the red shirt, if one of them is successful for us, then no need to worry about the red shirt you’re playing the rest of the year.

If one or both after Ricky are not successful, then maintain the red shirt(s) and bring Ricky back in. Seems pretty simple.

My fear is, especially watching this North Texas football game right now with their 5-0 program on national TV, first ever sell out crowd, program on the rise, currently leading against a nationally ranked team, that that’s where he would end up if he doesn’t get an opportunity here and soon.

Anyway Regardless of all that, great post

I agree with all that except I would start Luke right away so he knows the next 8 days that he’s the guy and takes starter snaps in practice. I wouldn’t want to waste a bye week praying for a miracle to be answered with Rickie, and wasted time where Carney could get in synch with the 1’s.

I firmly believe if Fran and staff think Luke gives us a better chance at winning then Luke will play.

You can’t worry about a Redshirt in the portal era so I doubt that is impacting any decision.

Also we don’t know how ready Luke is. Remember how high we all were on Lamson based off 1 spring game?
Unfortunately coaches are not infallible and they don’t always get it right, including Fran. I think he is more likely to give Rickie the benefit of the doubt out of loyalty for now.

If you think any Texas high school is comparable to JE, you are not well versed in Texas football. Any Texas football school would knock the snot out of JE.
The equivalent of J-E in Texas was the comp I attempted to make.

They were in the smallest part of TX football. That’s all. My bad for not being clearer.

With all due respect, and I mean it sincerely, where is the proof that we stand a better chance of winning with Luke Carney?
I have not studied LC's past performances and I have not seen enough of his play at SU to make any type of reasonable conclusion.
I stand with the thought that if FB saw anything like another Steve Angeli in LC, he would be in by now.

Hes not Rickie is the proof. Most of us who want Luke see Rickie doesn't have it so we just want to see if Luke can give us a spark.

If we can get half the play out of Carney as the Pitt freshman QB, we’ll be lucky. Why can’t we be so lucky?

Narduzzi may be annoying but he and his staff can coach and they are a good team period. Most likely going to stomp us either way. But would love it if Carney was at least as good as this kid.

The Pitt kid is going to crush our defense.

Putting everything together and balancing all the intricacies, I personally would start Collins against Pitt. Give him the first half. If he stinks up the joint you come out fresh with Carney to start the second half. That way Pitt won't have half time to make adjustments for new QB. Could potentially catch them off guard and gain an advantage that way

Problem with this is if the hole is dug too deep in the first half.

Conversely, where is the proof Carney doesn’t give us a better chance of winning?

Well that is a good point but the defense needs to do their part
Harder for the defense to do their part if the offense puts them in a hole and besides that’s the other side of the ball so not really relevant to who is the QB.

Agree with you. Might not be able to wait until the second half if he really stinks up the joint in the first quarter.

Just a hunch: if Rickie didn’t kill it in practice and video study last week, this next week is an unofficial open competition in practice. That’s why Fran hasn’t said anything. If we had insiders at practice, we might see Cool Hand Luke splitting reps, or close to it. Based upon nothing other than gut and a Cinderella storyline, if Luke gets the chance, no one will take the job away from him. He could be a Jaxon Dart type energizer

Do you mean the guy that was first team all SEC and a first round draft choice? Is that realistic ?

You need proof to know we cannot win nor compete with Collins? I can’t give you proof Carney will do better than Collins - but I can give you absolute certainty that we will lose with Collins - I can give you absolute certainty that Collins will not be playing for us next year

Well I am watching the Pitt - Florida State game right now. We in trouble. Big trouble.
Perfect storm. Pitt comes in super confident. Narduzzi plans against the wrong qb/game plan. He never adjusts. We’ve seen it before
