Luke Carney

Not sure Fran got pissed when asked about pulling Carney. Not sure I buy the answer that they’re still learning the play book. Both have been here 10 months. Angeli was only here 3 before he started.
My complaint is that I do not feel he gave Carney a real chance. First possession all designed runs. Second possession mostly designed runs and a couple short passes. Pitt had every one in the box. Should have him at least taken one shot down field. Also pulling him for Ricky on the third down was a mistake.
Hopefully he gets more run at GT and they allow him to do more than just handoff and a couple short passes.

IF all they have Carney do is hand off, then what even is the point?

Let him get some RPO action, so he can actually play QB.

And take a deep shot now and again -
worst case, it’s a long “arm punt”.

Isn’t Luke (at least listed) at 6’2 205lbs?

I've got sideline seats and attended the quad walk yesterday. He's marginally bigger than me; it's always a crapshoot guessing but if I had to, it'd be a hair shy of 6' and like 190-195. If I didn't know who he was I would've guessed he was a nickel.

Personally I've no doubt he's tall enough to be a dual threat; he'd have like half a helmet over Kyler Murray. And he's not too small to play. But also, a year in the weight room wouldn't hurt to curb the risk of some feral edge rusher ending his season.

Too lazy to type it all again:

And YES as you guys note, for gods sake run more rpos, options whatever to give yourselves a better chance to win

Fran may have an overly strong loyalty to Rickie and because of that isn't looking at the situation objectively. He named Rickie the starter after Spring Ball which some thought might have been premature. Throughout training game he kept reiterating that Rickie and Steve were very very close. You had some on the inside say they didn't know how Fran was going to choose. Maybe he really really wanted Rickie to win the job but in the end even he had to concede Steve was the better option. If it had really been close he may have picked Rickie as QB1. Now that Steve is out, he has renewed his (maybe blind) loyalty to Rickie and just won't consider any alternative. If they aren't preparing Luke for more of the playbook because of that it may be coaching malpractice if Rickie goes down. If Luke sees it this way, why stay.

For anyone to think that the summer/fall camp quarterback competition was remotely close is mind boggling. Collins was named the starter after Spring Football based on competition against newly arrived true freshman, RF Wiliams, non throwing QB Johnson. Coach Brown went and Got Steve Angeli for a reason as he said in last nights post game presser. Steve Angeli arrived and learned the offense in two months and was 3-1 as a starter. Collins has been here since January and still looks lost. It was a tough break for Steve Angeli but all you have to do is look at the results on the field to see how close the competition was not. Here is to a speedy recovery Steve Angeli and Go Orange!!!!!

After watching Carney play last night I still have no idea how he is as a qb. They gave him the most vanilla plays to run and pulled him on a third down to have Collins come in and get crushed. This OC really needs to be given the freedom to call plays, and if he is already then he needs to scrap his calls and cater it to who we have available. I feel bad for Carney who was thrown out of there for no reason, and the D who played a solid game overall.

Frans job is to make the hard decisions within the building. If there are players pushing for Collins to remain the starter it sure doesn’t look like it from the effort of the offense on the field. If it is pressure from boosters who paid for Collins then it’s Fran’s job to have those conversations and explain to the booster what is going on. Fran has to be in the business of winning no matter what and Collins ain’t it.

I don't think it's players or boosters pushing. I think it's all Fran.

I can accept that Carney doesn't have complete mastery over the full play book at this point.

What I don't believe is that a) the staff exhausted his capabilities and b) that they saw enough negative in the snaps he got to indicate there was no possibility of him moving the ball. Especially considering the kind of leash Collins gets.

I saw in Carney a guy that looked a little bigger than expected based on how small he reportedly is, and that is very, very quick. I would have liked to have gotten a better sense for how he is as a passer, but that seems to have been too much to ask.

I think they literally didn’t plan to play Carney. I think they (probably Fran) thought Rickie would figure it out and run a serviceable offense. It kind of tells you all you need to know that they have minimal trust in Carney at this time if they are not clearing with his family that we may burn the redshirt, give him all the first team reps this week, and prepare Rickie or Jakhari or Rich to be the backup. I believe Rickie has potential, I can see why they wanted to bring him in. But I just can’t believe it’s a culture fit for what I think we need in a QB. If it was you would see a different level of edge (dawg) that McCord and Angeli had in operating the offense in good moments and bad moments. If Carney doesn’t have the ability to run the RPO Pro Spread offense (I think that’s basically what the offense is), the entire QB room will need to be reconsidered. We may need two portal QBs (going to cost a lot), a current power level QB that is more pro style looking for a new scene and a proven QB at a lower level looking for an opportunity at a higher level. QBs that seize the opportunity look elite in this offense. I pray Angeli fully recovers and is able to pick up where he left off, but you got to plan for the scenario Angeli is never the same again.
