Maliq Brown starting at Duke

Maliq got more money, a better degree, a chance to play for an NC, a chance to play with a generational talent, better players, a better coach, and at a program that dwarfs ours in the history and landscape of college basketball. What misstep did he make?

I do think he would have had more playing time here, played more at his preferred 4 position and been more developed and relied on as an offensive player than just a defensive expert, than he has at Duke. He started 25 games here but has never started any games in his 2 years at Duke. Duke has their star offensive players so balance on offense isn’t needed, if he played here, he would have been expected to contribute on offense more than at Duke. He seems happy with his decision and they appreciate his defensive prowess as we did, but more money, a much better chance to play for a championship, being closer to his home at a more storied program, more talented teammates etc are all good points that one can’t blame him for choosing. He wasn’t promised a starting position here nor at Duke obviously so the other factors were more important to him. Hopefully he remembers that he got this opportunity because SU recruited him and gave him the chance to show his game and talent.

(could be not entirely true but I know for a fact that SOME of it is) Maliq went to Red wanting to test the nba waters to see what he needed to work on and what scouts thought about his game, with intention of coming back. Red wasn’t happy about that so he said he should just enter the portal if that was the case and he did, pretty sure after he actually did red tried to circle back about it and say to come back to cuse but by then it was to late.

This. And I don’t see how him opting for this but means it’s any less about basketball for him. Seems like a pretty genuine team guy.

I am confused - Maliq said he was returning March 11th but then entered the transfer portal April 1st. The nba draft deadline was April 27th for college players but he never did enter it to test the waters instead announcing his transfer commitment to Duke on April 20th. If he was serious about getting NBA feedback and that was his major issue with Red, why didn’t he actually do it after entering the portal? Seems like something is missing.

Like I said it wasn’t all the facts and some could have been left out, I’m just saying what i remember from it. It was something about want to get a look from scouts and red felt a way about it all and it didn’t turn out right.

Never heard that story. If accurate, another strike against.
