Maliq vs UNC

Got the start because of injury, played 30 minutes. 6-9 from the field for 15 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, and 5 steals. Also had about 8 deflections. It was crazy! Also crazy was John Schyer said “he hasn’t lost a game in this building! Oh wait, yeah he did when he was a visitor!” Damn man he didn’t have to do us like that!!!

Scheyer seems good but 20M in NIL makes it easy
Maybe we’ll see how easy it is if Hop comes here with $15-20M in NIL himself next year (runs and hides).

Seriously, yeah, they have money, but Scheyer can coach. I don’t think Red is coaching Duke to a #1 ranking and I think Scheyer would have our roster better prepared if they had switched places this year.

At the very least he would have had JJ try to get to the hoop -or as close as
Possible - for the last shot.
Knowing that Pitt would have to bacl
Off to avoid fouling.

He’s a tremendous role player no doubt. Would have loved to have had him here.

But he’s not a go to player, nor is he a 40% 3 pt shooter on a team that makes an ncaa tournament.
As I recall, he left after we signed Donnie Freeman. Freeman was getting so much hype that Maliq was convinced by others (including Duke) that Freeman would start over him. He was my favorite SU player when he was here, and we sure could have used him these past two years, especially given Freeman's injury history

No doubt. Agree 100%. Really wanted him to stay. Would have been a great player here. He just got an offer we weren’t willing to match. The suggestion by some that he was going to going to be a 3 point threat or better than our previous all big east players was preposterous and proved to be factually inaccurate.

Why would they avoid fouling JJ? He can’t shoot.

Echoing my thoughts. If he gets within 30 feet of the rim you foul him. What are the odds he makes 2?

Still, I would have him going the length of the court right to the rim. Maybe Capel isn't sharp enough to do the hack-a-JJ.

Yup. I loved him as a recruit. I think I nailed it right on the head when we were recruiting him too. I was saying he’s never going to be the go to guy. He’s never going to light up the scoreboard. Buts he’s a glue guy that every championship team needs, he does EVERYTHING well but not elite. Now obviously you can say his defense is elite and I wouldn’t argue that. But he was coming out I was saying he’s gonna be a 9-10ppg, 6-7 rpg and 2-3 assists per game guy. So pretty much nailed it. Didn’t nail how effective he was going to be in defense. He’s just a stud at his role, and a winner. Championship caliber player and I wish him well. He’s a really good kid too
