Manipulating the NET

Win tonight. Start there. See how things play out.

Pray for some games to break our way.

LSU beating Georgia would be nice start, can't have them losing to Georgia - also need them to win out too

Really need Oregon to win out (including over Arizona) would be nice too.

Not sure who this is, but he does not have Syracuse anywhere near being in. Not even a mention.

Up to 78th in KenPom, and I think we were 87th there before? Looking forward to seeing the NET update tomorrow.

Moved up to 82.

Wisconsin losses to Indiana who was 107 and stays at 22. Indiana only moves up 2 spots with the win to 105 over a NET 22 team.

Both Pitt and NC State fall, somehow, after their game last night.

Boise State boat races a terrible Air Force team by 31 last night and jump to 26 from 31.

Villanova destroys GTown by 28 and moves to 34 from 38.

Margin of victory or defeat should not be measured so heavily.

Make it make sense.

They both lost, why wouldn’t they fall?

In KP we jumped 9 I think. Not sure there’s much we can do to improve it now. The cake is baked.

Clemson is sitting at 23.

Louisville is 206.

Absolutely must win against Louisville, and by like 16.

If they can beat Clemson, we will be on many more watch lists.

I still think we need more. Probably Clemson, Duke, or UNC in the ACCT. The blowout losses kill us.

Good news is the way we are playing it’s just about keeping it going not as to whether we could win those games.

Cuse is 42 in ESPN’s SOR (Strength of Record/Resume) and 33 in RPI. (ESPN’s BPI has us pretty low.) We should be in. Forget the NET. They need to look at other metrics to find those outlier teams that the NET is undervaluing.

three games ago we needed 7 straight wins to be considered for an ncaa bid

We have won the first three

Louisville will hopefully be 4

Clemson is THE key game in this whole scenario. Win and then we can probably get in with 2 wins in the ACC tourney which would make 7 in a row. The Chaminade game doesnt count for anything. We need to get our NET number to 50 at worst. Anything above that and its not good. Right or wrong its the reality of todays formula.

Lose to Clemson and its ACC title or bust.

The simplified answer is that It's not so much MOV as it is MOV relative to expected MOV. If Team B is expected to beat Team A by 8 points, but wins by 4, then you're not going to see much movement. If they win by 14, they could move up a bit.

And also keep in mind that 1) we're almost done with the season, almost all of the data is in the rear view mirror (think of it as your earnings through the year, you're making $20/hr and on December 1st, you get a raise to $25/hr - how does that affect your annual earnings? Barely) and 2) all of these teams and rankings are interconnected. It takes a lot to move and even more to stand out from the crowd of middling teams.

That’s the problem with a system that relies on its own expectations. It’s somewhat self fulfilling at this point. It’s a flawed metric when winning is what should matter most of all.

SVP with a nice piece on manipulating the NET on his "One Big Thing" segment." The Clemson coach's quotes carry weight given that they are actually looking good on the NET.
Need more of it.

It will really piss me off if things play out the wrong way in the ACC and we have to listen to Lunardi and the haters say they were right all along with a 3-4 bid ACC.

Wake and UVA are quickly playing themselves off the bubble. Pitt seems to have the easiest path to 12-8 in the ACC + 21 wins, but their noncon is terrible and only that win at Cameron looks impressive especially if Wake and UVA keep losing. UVA hasn't scored over 50 their last 3 games and we saw Wake on the road last night and it wasn't pretty.

Forget Ga Tech and Cuse is the only team getting it done even if it hasn't been pretty with the metrics
