Maraad Watson transferring to Texas

Tough situation if he is trying to get more money out of this. If you are Fran, how do you tell Pena he has to go and not do the same thing with Watson?

Speculation on my part that this is money related. I would think if you want to be true to your word, you would have to let Watson go too if he is trying to renegotiate.

Just to add, I understand the value of a Sophomore All-American Defensive linemen vs a 6th year slot guy.
1. We may not need to match the highest bid.

2. Our lines not deep like WR.

3. This kids a genuine prospect, pena’s an udfa type.

4. I dont think we’re competing with skill position nil amounts here but I could be wrong.

Yeah, at some point you hafta just say NO.

Otherwise every decent player on your team will be coming to you constantly, trying to wrangle more $ out of whatever deal they had previously committed to.

So, I guess we will see if Fran thinks Watson is going about this “the right way”,
or “the wrong way”.

If it’s the former - then we try our best to make a compelling enough offer to keep him.

If it’s the latter - vaya con dios!
Don’t let the door hit ya….

Pena was a captain.
Yeah but regardless, it is very similar. Both are the best in their position on our roster and they both got significant bumps in NIL based on insiders. They both went through spring ball and now want more. There can only be so many captains on a team, but it does not mean Watson was not a leader.

Or to play sparingly then transfer down a level.
Watson is a stud and will play wherever he ends up, he is that good. In general though, we have seen time and time again how the grass is not always greener.

Sometimes the confidence these guys have in themselves is a detriment to their career long term. It feels like the vast majority of guys who leave a good situation at Cuse, wind up falling off wherever they land.

Surprised he stayed through spring. This is minor league baseball with roster turnover. In no way am I surprised with all this. Its expected
We also have a lot of DL players coming in one well thought of transfer at 6-6 327, and Perry was very good at the end of last year.
Think the interior of the line will be very good even if Watson leaves. A couple of guys who would have been starters last year are supposed to be back also.

NIL is bad enough. Tampering is another form of cancer, but even more virulent. Portal is full of players, but that's too easy for the lowlifes that crawl out of the gutter and come after our guys. Wonder who's been on Watson's phone lately?

So let's see this kid wasn't DART, killed his legacy, is dead to all of us...
This money game is a game we are going to have a hard time staying relevant in. Don't blame the player at all.

What coach would want to put themselves through this in the current college football game?

Do you have to re-recruit everyone on your roster every off-season, simultaneously recruiting high school players and portal transfers, what allows and state of affairs.

You'll need a Director of Portal Scouting, a Director of HS Scouting, and a Director of Player Retention going forward.

That's why the need contracts for a minimum of 2-3 years on these kids. I know if I were a coach I would probably be ready to pack it in after a few years or so. Very, very stressful with all this NIL BS. Something needs to be done and soon.

Issue is enforceability. We already have contracts. Kids are still leaving.

So if it’s so important for the state, maybe they can step up? A lot of tax dollars in the state of NY without a flagship SUNY competing in high major football. Though by the day the ACC feeling more mid major. College sports have a huge impact on the culture. Strengthen the ties with SUNY ESF and give the middle to the rest of these flagship state schools. I’m looking for anything, just a tough week when you look back. Hopefully the bleeding is over lol. Hopeful though that the admin is many steps ahead in addressing this.
