Thank you Mark Cuban keep speaking the truth.

My favorite quote "The referees couldn't manage a White Castle. Seriously, the college game is more physical than the NBA game, and the variation in how it's called from game to game [is a problem]. Hell, they don't even have standards on balls. They use different balls. One team's got one ball, the other team's got another ball. There are so many things that are ridiculous."

Exactly. I'd suggest people start preparing for some late nights watching the Western playoffs because that basketball is pretty damn entertaining. Hoping we get to see Cleveland vs Atlanta, and SA vs GS at some point.

If you don't watch at least the western conference playoffs, I cant take you seriously when you try to tell me you love the sport of basketball.

IMO Cuban is spot on. And the sad part is a lot of the people's comments on ESPN's posted article (on social media, etc) are disagreeing with him. There is no right or wrong of course, but definitely a lot of ignorance out there it seems.

The NBA also has so many more possessions that missed calls dont have the same impact. In college, with shorter games and much longer shot clocks, each completely blown call means so much more. I mean, the shot clock is 45% longer in college than the NBA. Think about that. It makes no sense at all. FORTY FIVE PERCENT.

Here's the difference:

College hoops is content to remain what it is. That's why it's getting worse.

The NBA actively is trying to get better. That's why it's evolving and innovating in ways that make it more fun.

Its almost as if some people got turned off by the NBA after the Jordan/Bird/Magic era ended when it took a real down turn, haven't really watched since and comment based on old memories and an occasional game here and there. Its hard for me to understand anyone saying the NBA is in a bad state if they watched a considerable amount of playoff ball in the last 4 years.

Its why it looks like basketball when you watch rather than 'Australian Rules Scrum Basketball' like college resembles more often than not.

Because:

- There's no defense
- No team ball
- Players don't care and are only in it for the money

The last one is my favorite. Guys who have been playing the game their entire lives, don't care.

These two are so off-base it isn't even funny.

Edit: Obviously some teams like the Knicks don't play defense, but the elite teams play very tough defense and move the ball extremely well.

Edit x2: Wow, my sarcasm meter is way off today apparently lol. Also apparently didn't read through to the end of the post to see that you were clearly being sarcastic.

Except the NBA is in a better state now than it has been in quite some time. The playoffs are going to be great as they were the last few seasons.
And Waaaaaay too long. That still isn't fixed except for the owners.

Love people who also criticize these guys for going for big contracts instead of staying on potential winning teams. Because every situation is the same, right?

As if those same people who turn down those contracts.

I'm sure people were criticizing James Harden when he left OKC. Wahh he only wants money, his best chance to win is with OKC. How's that working out?

So true on all points from those who rebuff the NBA.
- Its impossible to defend the singular talent let alone 5 talented players working together. NBA defense is all about trying to force shots you can live with and contesting at the rim as much as possible. The level of defense especially in the playoffs far exceeds that we see in college but the level of offense is simply an unstoppable force. Is like moving water all you can do is try to direct it in your favor.
- Team ball is what separates the good teams from the great teams and it is again becoming more common in the NBA. That doesn't mean you still don't take advantage of singular talent but some do not realize that it often takes team ball to allow singular talent to thrive.
- Season is long and they pace themselves for sure. Money is exactly why they always care, but you are also correct that plenty of these guys are just gym rats that love the game.

Disparities among basketballs would rank approximately #497 on the list of things wrong with college hoops.

But Cuban's point is well-taken.

But it is strange that there isn't a standard ball to be used with a standard pressure for it to be inflated to. I agree with you its way down the list but it highlights that the NCAA cannot even do the very simple easy things that would bring some level of consistency to their game. They don't even try as long as the money keeps rolling in. This is why rebounding is a free for all scrum, why contact on the driver is called 20 different ways in each game, why coaches routinely wonder around on the court shouting instructions, why the block/charge is an issue, why flopping is rewarded, why there is so much dislodging allowed in the post and why there is so impeding of the offensive players going on.

How can anyone be wrong here on this, but I would like to say it all starts with "AAU" ball

AAU ball is worse than college. Some of these officials call games like they were just pulled off the street and given a shirt and a whistle. No consistency, other than "less whistles...keep the games moving". More games, more $$$ for the tournament organizer.

Agree with Cuban and it's laughable that anyone says the NBA is anything other than a fantastic sport now. The ratings, merchandise and attendance are way up and the young stars in the game are ridiculously likeable. How can you not like Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Russel Westbrook who just donated a car he won to a single mother in need etc... The sport has evolved to maximize fan interest being innovative like the NFL and not stuck in the past like CBB and the MLB.

However, Cuban needs to take some blame on behalf of the owners. You guys are the ones drafting these kids. There's a reason a Chris McCullough and JP Tokoto think it's a good decision to go pro when everyone else is scratching their heads.

I was kind of in shock when I heard how much money is made off AAU. I never put much thought into it but, I forgot who it was, but he was co-hosting with SVP and has gone to AAU events and said their is a lot of money being made with the selling of merchandise that all the scouts/coaches buy and sponsors etc.

I agree with just about everything people have said about the NBA in this thread.

HOWEVER, many posters seem to be painting with a broad brush. Sure, the quality of play from the San Antonios, Golden States, Clevelands, etc. is amazing high. And the intensity / quality of play ratchets up exponentially in the second round of the playoffs, after the deadweight has been trimmed.

But not every team plays at that level. It is one thing to point to the great teams and discuss how fantastic they play, and how consistent they are. But I invite you to watch a Minnesota game, or a Knicks game, or a Lakers game, and you'll see a completely different level of play.

There is no question that the elite teams [and even the good teams] play at a level that is far superior to NCAA basketball. Can't be disputed.

But there is also a lot of low quality ball played in the NBA that many NBA advocates conveniently fail to bring up when defending the professional game.
