Marquette fires Wojo / hires Shaka Smart

Am i the only one who’s a bit underwhelmed at this fascination w/ Shaka Smart?
Don’t get me wrong, I think he’s a good coach, but not of this superstar stature that others seem to ascribe to him. Texas was decent this year, but not world beaters. Yet his name keeps cropping up for every new opening. What am i missing?

Yes, I think you are. I would kill for him to take over for Boeheim on that fateful day. Texas is a basket-case program now that can't decide what they want and whatever it is they want it has to happen immediately. It's a recipe for short- and long-term irrelevance.

Texas fans must be happy.
If what I understand about UT-Austin is true, more like a certain faction of boosters are happy. (And this has nothing to do this race. This is literally about booster factions.)

The graveyard of coaches.
I don't know about that. Tom Penders lasted 10 seasons and Rick Barnes 17. And the Horns made the NCAA Tourney 24 times in that span.

I know in Boeheim years, those two are part-timers, but UT has been a really solid place to coach. Shaka's administration will, however, be remembered as a fail.

Rick Barnes was the perfect coach for a school like Texas.
They don’t care as much as football but expect competitive teams pretty much every season.

He has Durant and couldn’t even get out of the second round though.

John Beilein would be the perfect caretaker for that job but I doubt he wants it.

If Beard says no I could see them going after Underwood at Illinois.

Perhaps I should have said coaching underachievement. Number of Final Fours since 1948? One - 2003.

Really? That’s quite a bold statement! Lol
Yeah, i know he was the architect of those runs at VCU, but this has been the first year he’s made any noise at Texas, and he’s had good players.
If he goes to Marquette and kills it though, maybe we poach after a couple of years.

I hope it is Underwood. Need him as far from the East Coast as possible.

Shaka took over a VCU program that was already in great shape before him with Anthony Grant. He did well there but it's a little deceiving that he was considered having done something special when it wasn't like the program was turned around.

still capitalizing on goodwill earned from the David vs Goliath upset of Duke several years back. Come to think of it, that loss may have begun Ks slide into mediocrity, they haven't done much since.

They won the 2015 title and went to three additional Elite 8's since then. That's pretty solid.

Further proof for those of you concerned when JB retires that we will get a big time coaching name if Marquette lands Shaka Smart. Like I said Hopkins first and likely will be the guy as he should be I don't care if he continues to finish at the bottom of his conference the next couple years. But if not him we will get a big name.

that would be for Syracuse, not so much for Dook nation. Considering the talent he is betrothed each year, they can't be happy with that.

shaka khanned from texas ?

rick barnes is a helluva coach and he didn't stick. barnes is 727-385 (.654) at some marginal programs. final four . several regular season titles. naismith award. 5x conference COY. and he's not worthy.
agree. who would want that job ?
