Marrone - Hunt

If Doug Marrone stayed one more year (or if Hackett stayed at SU) I honestly believe we would not be witnessing the type of football we all watched last night at the Dome. Hunt would have never taken a snap under center with Marrone as head coach and I base this on Marrone's last luncheon at Dorsey's when a fan asked him about Terell Hunt. Marrone's response was very direct "Terrell Hunt is on the scout team for a reason."

I hope that all of us die hard SU football fans on this site who have spent the past 20+ years buying season tickets, traveling to see the boys play on the road, and donating to the Ernie Davis Club will have the chance to see this program returning to prominence on the national level again but I am beginning to have my doubts.

Marrone recruited Hunt.

Who would he be using now, Wilson? And that would lead to points?

Took Nassib until his 3rd year as a starter before he was productive.

What perplexes my mind, is how as a HC of a D1, P5 football team, you don't have a QB who can complete 10 yard passes routinely, yet alone connect on anything 15+ yards. There is ZERO threat at all. We get down 1 TD, and the D must be like well, its over folks. Our KICKER has more TD passes than our QB after 4 games. 2 of which were vs non p5 teams. That is a SERIOUS problem. Not sure who to blame, but you HAVE to be able to recruit QBs that can throw.

Marrone had a verbal commitment from Zach Allen at that point in time and you could tell that he did not think Hunt had the skill set to be a D1 QB.

Well, you don't just stop recruiting QBs. But when a head coach says a freshman QB is on the scout team for a reason, that usually means that the freshman has a lot to learn, not that I don't think that freshman will ever be a good QB. You think he was admitting to you that he already knew he made a mistake in recruiting him?

Could have moved him, but with his lack of speed, I'm not sure where else he fits in.

Nassib was productive as a sophomore. He could find open receivers at the very least.

He was a national player as a senior. He had tremendous command at that point in his career.

Hunt is not productive at this point. He does not seem to see receivers, is unable to put air under the ball when throwing long, and does not seem to throw a catchable ball at this point.

He is a solid straight ahead runner but is certainly not an option threat.

I am dumbfounded by his lack of improvement. I wish I understood the game better so I could better gauge his ability and his potential.

I feel the exact same way. We were so close, especially with the class he had coming in. We were definitely on an upward trajectory. The roots that were being laid from a recruiting standpoint was about to take off. Personable or not I am convinced the results on the field would have made it a non-factor.

Oh what could have been.

Go to the TNIAAM site for Shafer's assessment of what is really important. His tough act is pure BS. I've heard enough BS by head coaches but this one really pops to the top. Putting Orange football in perspective to the problems of ISIS AND EBOLA is beyond pathetic. That comment could provide a thesis paper for some kid to the importance of sports and its entertainment level in times of stress and horror. I'd be happy to write it for him. The examples are far too plentiful sadly. The depression ,Pearl Harbor JFK's assassination and the And the George W presidency or more accurately the Dick Cheney administration and the resulting crash of the Wall Street driven banking system and subsequent bailouts.Sports and entertainment were instrumental in getting us through these crises. Hey Scot try coaching elsewhere since you are so happy with your failed team and 7 figured pay check While your at it take McDonald with you. Just how much do you practice tackling? The opening kickoff when half ythe tea had a shot at the Louisville returner. Also when Redman started doing damage on the ground I saw no adjustments to stop this super RB. As for Ben Lewis dropping that dead pig, I've seen that in the pros. When you are THAT wide open the ball seems to take forever to get to you that you start thinking which is the worse thing to do He froze and the ball hit him in the chest and bounced off. You might also note that Ben made some quality catches in the game as well as Ismael. After Ishy's catch I didm't see any more of him. Was he sidelined for making an unauthorized great catch? And George McD, did you call a pitch to AAM in the end zone? Louisvile has a terrific defense against the run and you pitBACK in the end zone to the guy that just came into the game and became the focus of the Cardinal defense. Now thats EEFn stupid. OK AAM made some nice runs late in the game, that doesn't excuse how the kid was used in this situation in the end zone. Its the offense Shafer. You are a defensive minded coach which should help in devising plays that are difficult for any defense to stopGeorge McDonald is a greater recruiter but he is on the polar opposite in being a good OCSowhat does Shafer say? "WE GOTTA OUT TOUGH THE OTHER GUYS". How about outplaying the other guys? Yesterday Louisville out toughed the Orange in our house. As a variation of the QB position I would love to see AJ in for a few plays He is far more mobile than Hunt and Wilson. Hunt thinks far too long about running the ball than finding his primary and getting the ball thrown. He comes back next year as well so I don't see a miraculous jacking of his game unless he begins now. Edouard is the only new contender coming this January. He was heavily recruited for some reason so maybe he can beat out the current slugs and play.

Hunt would have never played for Doug. Wilson would be starting. You have to have a QB who is a threat to beat you with his Arm. Hunt lacks vision and he isnt a passer rather a thrower who lacks touch. Every team we play is going to stack the box and force us to beat them passing the ball.

PA, I respect that you made this post. I know you've been a big Hunt fan for a while now and have been really rooting for him to be a difference maker, and the way he has played this season has been a disappointment. I think we've all been hoping that this would be working out much better right now. Anyway, just wanted to give you a lot of credit for giving such an objective take and seeing the good and the bad on a player you've made an emotional investment in. Really solid post.

I think we would have handed the ball to Zach Allen actually, and would have taken the foot off the gas quite a bit from 2012.

I read the quote on Nunes and I hate the perspective card as much as anyone else. But it seems clear to me he's talking about being criticized not being that big a deal. He's not trying to say that all the losing is ok. I usually cringe when coaches and players talk about how worse things are in other parts s of theworld. But in this case I think he's talkingabou the criticism not getting him down- which is part of being a coach

I think you're on to something. At least I hope you are.

Zach Allen fakes a hand off to Gus Edwards and hits Ron Thompson over the middle for a 25 yd TD.
oh what could have been, that would be some good football. Have to go with what we have though and not dread on the past.

What is this "play fake" you speak of?

They actually had a bunch of play action Friday. Some worked, some didn't, but they did put it in.

Saw Zach Allen in the crowd in the post game celebration last night.

Pissed me off.

Hunt would be way more successful under Marrone and Hackett. Hunt has flaws but he also does enough things well to where with the right coaching and system he could be very productive.
There is nothing I can think of that supports that statement.

Maybe, maybe not. We'll never know how it would have worked out. We always think the back up, or in this case someone who didn't make it here, would be the next great thing. Allen as a RFr is 3rd string at TCU with 2 Fr recruits behind him. Who knows if he would have been a star here like so many predicted the day we signed him. Our roster is littered with players that posters thought were the next coming. Heck, less than a year ago most people thought we had the greatest QB depth ever. Now people are questioning if we even have a QB on the roster that we can win with.

Its a shame we don't have an OC who can see all this and adjust in game plan and play calling A decent QB coach should spot Hunt's actions and thinking and coach accordingly. Otherwise why do they pay these guys and give them specific responsibilities? Shafer's sanctimonious after game comments are a kind of hiding the facts about his coaching and that of his staff. I don't think that with all his "tough" talk he has the cajones to change OCsThere must be another guy out there that can recruit Florida. Keep the OC and recruiter separate.

I think Marrone is a very solid QB coach.

I suspect that he would make a difference with Hunt.

How much I don't know.
