Marrone in Contact with O'Brien

Wouldn't mind another good, athletic LB.

I wonder if that was an awkward conversation. Kind of like, " Hey Jim, while you're laid up after your surgery, would you mind if I had sex with your wife?"
don't think it's awkward at all

Bill - some of these kids aren't going to want to stick around through these sanctions. If they're planning to move on I'd like to see if they have any interest in going to Syracuse.

Seems pretty straight forward.

Glad to hear it confirmed.

Wonder how many did not contact Coach O'Brien before recruiting his players?

BOB says Kirk Ferentz, George O'Leary, Doug Marrone are coaches that have contacted him about recruiting PSU players.

Just as I suspected. I'm sure most of the conversation was "how you holding up".

And if you think about, O'Brien has a numbers problem. He has to be down to 75 this year, and 65 after that. He can't afford to carry anybody who isn't capable of being a B10 starter quickly.

Through this process he has an opportunity to fine tune his roster to keep the best of the best.

O'Brien actually listed Marrone first.

He said "Doug Marrone, George OLeary and Kirk Ferentz are coaches who've called me personally"...to say they're interested.

OBrien went on to say some coaches have done it right and other coaches have not - by not, he meant because they haven't shown the courtesy to at least contact him and let him know they're going to recruit his players. They just contacted players without notifying anybody.

OBrien also mentioned he had an hour and a half conference call with parents last night and also says his players are releasing a statement that they're staying. He doesn't expect everyone to stay but sounded pretty confident most are.

Said Bowl games don't mean unless playing for the title and they can still play football in front of 108,000 fans 6 weekends a fall, won't get that anywhere else in the country. Went on to say he'll reschedule to end the season with a 'big game' or a trip to Hawaii.

Will add, it didn't sound to me like a lot of coaches have contacted him (by phone). He only listed the 3 coaches above and didn't follow it up by saying they're were some others etc. The vibe I got was that he was a little miffed that coaches wouldn't have the common courtesy to phone him personally.

I would kill--absolutely kill--to get an OL that can give us two solid years. WR is another position of need, especially for next year.

Hope we land a few of these kids--would go a long way toward bolstering our nucleus.

Interesting, O'Brien and Marrone met while on O'Leary's staff. I also beleive that Marrone introduced O'Brien to his wife.

or how about - "the NCAA really devastated your program, but that's nothing compared to what Greg Robinson can do"

Nope. Won 8 games in year 2 including a nice bowl victory.

I think O'Brien is right about bowl games - under the present system.

Again, I may be very wrong but I think those who predict the demise of PSU Football are wrong.

The Big Ten, the TV exposure, the coaching and the 108, 000 for home games will attract great players in my opinion.

Maybe at first coaches didn't know the process or didn't understand. Right out of the gate, some of their players were contacted by a dozen or more schools.

O'brien also mentioned telling the kids that the games will still be on TV. IMO That could end up being their saving grace in keeping many players.

thank you mr. official contrarian - because clearly I was being literal there and not making a joke

Classy move by Doug, but I'd expect nothing less. Even his detractors have to admit he's a stand up guy.

And I'm shocked - shocked - that Lane Kiffin was not included in that list.

I was waiting for him to say something like "a certain west coast coach, who's mentioned our program in the media frequently this week, hasn't reached out to contact me."

Kiffin was probably hiding in the bushes outside of the football complex calling to players after they left the team meeting the other day. "Pssst, Silas, over here, behind the shrubbery..."

Agreed.

Fewer people watch bowl games than regular season games these days.

PSU players will be on TV, cable, the Big Ten Netword and on and on.

There will be plenty of exposure over the course of 12 weeks.

OBrien did say they'll have to get Pennsylvania kids to buy in and walkon to the team paying a 'great state tuition'.

The scholarship limitation will absolutely hurt them. We saw what it did to us with regards to depth.
