IF SS is indeed done soon, is there any chance DM comes back or do most people think he's back in the NFL for good? I was just thinking with all of the upcoming and present upgrades in facilities, combined with a new AD, that maybe he could be lured back. Or has that ship sailed? Thoughts?

Pretty sure he's going to be an NFL guy from here on out.

Zero percent chance

I don't think either side wants him back. I get the feeling he is fine just coaching and not having to deal with media at this point and don't think he wants to recruit high school kids ever again.

JC, why is it a reflex to call on DM to be coach again? It's not going to happen. It's not going to happen. Why do people want him to come back? JC

Residual memory of the last time were ok. A lack of imagination or hope.

How ab0ut the fact that he is a really good football coach.

And, that he knows and understands the Syracuse Football situation.

And, that he took a dead program and won two bowl games in three years.

And that his 2012 offense did what many on this board want - it set nearly every SU passing record.

It has nothing to do with lack of imagination or lack of hope.

With DM lots of people liked, myself included, he was a damn good coach while he was here. What's wrong with people wanting someone to come back that had success? For me I wouldn't want him back, to many other good candidates out there right now. Plus I doubt DM leaves the NFL again.

That's why it didn't work out the first time. He thought he did, before he didn't.

the big Baloney he screwed us.

No, no he didn't.

Gross screwed us firing P and coming back with the GRob hire. Marrone at least got us back to being respectable before bolting.

Accept it, this is not a destination coaching spot. Anyone else who has success here will also bounce and become the town villain.

My only issue with him leaving was the timing and who he took on the staff. Still don't want him back

All coaches leave after the season in the middle of key recruiting time. If we hired from outside the program, he likely would've brought in his own staff anyways, so we're in the same predicament.

I will never understand the absolute disdain for Marrone on this board.

In the 11 years since P's firing, he was the only coach who had us playing consistently well. We got blown out most of the time against key opponents with both GRob and Shafer.

I would love it if Marrone came back and brought in a new crew of dynamo assistants who could handle the majority of the recruiting. Guarantee he would win 7-8 games next year with the young talent on the team right now alone.

Good speech. But you didn't really refute anything that I said. I didn't say he wasn't a good football coach or that he didn't do good job here.

Turnarounds are not that rare and ours was pretty slow and average as these things go.

In short - he did a good job - but if you think going back to him is a good option, you may have a lack of hope (finding a new coach is not as hard as we make it seem) or a lack of imagination (there are tons of guys that could have done what Doug did, maybe faster, and maybe with a longer lasting legacy).

A lot of Marrone's success can be attributed to the defensive coordinators he's been able to identify and hire (Shafer, Mike Pettine, Jim Schwartz).

No doubt Shafer would be gone. Would he be able to replace him with someone on the same level? I'm not so sure.

I feel like the Legend of Doug Marrone grows with each loss. He has many strengths and overall is a quality football coach. But he also has weaknesses and I question how high his ceiling is. I think he's best when having to rebuild a college program. But he bails before he can demonstrate an ability to take it beyond a level of average.

Unlike many, I think he's best fit for college football where he can instill discipline and structure to young men. That doesn't really fly in the NFL.

As for bringing him back here - I would be against it simply because I want an offensive mastermind here. Which Marrone is not.

Consistently well - when? Even in 2012 with that team we started with a 2-4 record.
