Marrone

All coaches leave after the season in the middle of key recruiting time. If we hired from outside the program, he likely would've brought in his own staff anyways, so we're in the same predicament. I will never understand the absolute disdain for Marrone on this board. In the 11 years since P's firing, he was the only coach who had us playing consistently well. We got blown out most of the time against key opponents with both GRob and Shafer. I would love it if Marrone came back and brought in a new crew of dynamo assistants who could handle the majority of the recruiting. Guarantee he would win 7-8 games next year with the young talent on the team right now alone.

So true on every point whether people want to admit it or not

A lot of Marrone's success can be attributed to the defensive coordinators he's been able to identify and hire (Shafer, Mike Pettine, Jim Schwartz). No doubt Shafer would be gone. Would he be able to replace him with someone on the same level? I'm not so sure. I feel like the Legend of Doug Marrone grows with each loss. He has many strengths and overall is a quality football coach. But he also has weaknesses and I question how high his ceiling is. I think he's best when having to rebuild a college program. But he bails before he can demonstrate an ability to take it beyond a level of average. Unlike many, I think he's best fit for college football where he can instill discipline and structure to young men. That doesn't really fly in the NFL. As for bringing him back here - I would be against it simply because I want an offensive mastermind here. Which Marrone is not.

Agree about his legend growing with every Shafer loss.

Crazy thing is when Marrone was here the most consistent thing was Shafer's D. If Shafer wants a shot in the NFL, he might want to call in that favor with Doug.

Yep. And that's why I was on board with the Shafer promotion. I thought he earned a shot. Just hasn't worked out.

Same here.

He has only been a college football HC once, so not sure how you can be so sure that's how he would always be.

Consistently well - when? Even in 2012 with that team we started with a 2-4 record.

In the 2009 season, Marrone was basically fielding a team of about 55. Many of the players that were on the team were flat-out told that they weren't good enough to play D1 ball and transferred. Mike Mele comes to mind.

I also would like a super offensive mind running the show, but I also wouldn't hate it if Marrone came back with a new staff.

I was also referring to his time with the Buffalo Bills - although the NFL is a different animal. And I'm not "so sure" - it's just what I think based on the data we have available.

How he left Buffalo is completely different... change in ownership and there was no guarantee that he was going to be brought back despite what people will say to the contrary. He exercised a brilliant clause that Sexton wrote into his contract, took his guaranteed money and tested the waters for another job. If they decided to not retain him, it likely would've been too late for him to get into the mix for other HC jobs.

Obviously, that didn't pan out well for him, but I don't think he "quit" on the Bills. He was simply taking the advice of his agent.

But in hindsight it wasn't a bright decision. He gave up an NFL HC position at a franchise with a very generous owner and a talented roster for an assistant coach position.

I'm sure he had his reasons for leaving the Bills - just like he had his reasons for leaving Syracuse. And I'm sure in his mind they were legitimate. My point is - he's never stayed long enough to demonstrate an ability to reach above-average heights (Top 25 ranking in college, playoffs in the NFL). Can he do it? Maybe, but I'm skeptical.

In hindsight, sure it was. There was no crystal ball though and I firmly thought he would've landed one of the open jobs in the offseason. Didn't pan out, but he is still being paid like a HC this year.

Watch for the Titans job...

"Bring back Marrone " feels an awful lot to me like "we should play option" or " we need to use the fullback more" in the category of stuff people say on the board that shouldn't ever actually happen.

That's because our best hope for the program is available.

No, no he didn't.

Gross screwed us BY FOLLOWING ORDERS TO firing P and coming back with the GRob hire. Marrone at least got us back to being respectable before bolting.

Accept it, this is not a destination coaching spot. Anyone else who has success here will also bounce and become the town villain.
Very important addition to your post. Did he screw up the choice? Yeah. Was he acting in a vacuum where he decided to fire P and had final say over the firing? Absolutely not.

He's employed. Saw a tweet about it.

I do think if Marrone really wanted to be happy it would be incredible to have him here as the best OL coach in college football. He has bigger dreams than that, I just think those dreams make him unhappy.

That is such a load of crap.

Impressive rebuttal. It took him 3 years to get to an offensive ranking better than 90th in the country. We can do better, regardless of who was the coach prior.

If you compiled a list of CFB HC who were available, Marrone wouldn't be the "best hope" #1. Given his bridge burning abilities (he might be #1 in that stat) I don't think he's ever coaching this program again. And he's employed.

So - not the best coach, not going to get a job here again, and currently employed elsewhere. I'm not sure anything in your post is true.

I wasn't referring to Marrone.

Thanks for the feedback. For the record I'm not for bringing DM back, was just curious where everyone else stood as I saw his name mentioned in other threads.

I guess the topic
The all-inclusive Cuse Coaching Thread
was too hard to follow :)

Yes, I was aware DM was brought up in a couple posts within various threads, HOWEVER, I felt considering he is an Orange alum/former player/former GA/former HC that he MAY warrant having his own thread.
