Did anyone listen to this (http://www.thescore1260.com/sectional.asp?id=23348)? I did and it was a good interview and I like Marrone. Seems like a good guy. But it does crack me up that publicly he could not come off any stiffer. It was cracking me up. Axe leads off the interview with a softball about the annual BE crab bake, to which Marrone responds, "We're thinking about football right now." Then Axe asks about practicing at Ft. Drumm or wherever and appears completely unprepared for how to answer the question. It's faaaarrrr easier to sit here writing but I'm assuming what DM likes about the military is their discipline, attention to detail and core values, etc.

I like the guy and think he can be a good coach. And I give him credit for the twitter feed and facebook page, which I'm sure he basically hates. I also believe he's intelligent and probably simply doesn't love doing pointless media interviews. The beginning of the interview though literally had me laughing out loud.

With our communications school, you would think our coaches would practice and improve their interview style. I expect some of our players do that -- and guys like Scoop got pretty good.

The football coaches should watch tapes of Mac in his prime. He showed energy and charm. Could turn around questions to make a joke. We got the usual coach-speak, but an occasional gem of a story. Maybe he was a natural.

Marrone has to be himself, but practically anyone can improve through watching tapes with a communications coach.

Why must we overanalyze every detail of every interview that Marrone does. Marrone is a straight shooter, sure he's a bit stiff in interviews, and I would imagine Doug is probably working 18 hour days getting ready for practice. Probably a bit unprepared for a local interview. If you ever get a chance to meet him, he is so far from a stiff, I know know how he comes across. Although Doug is a NYC guy he is about as close to a home grown talent that you will find, to me he reminds of a guy that could be a neighbor to anyone here who lives in CNY. We could get another Cali space cadet or some southern good ole bad to that I say . I just don't get it I guess.

While Coach Mac has a gift for gab, he had his fair share of responses that made you scratch your head. The difference may be that he just kept on talking right over his mistakes. Maybe you've just forgotten that-it was a long time ago.

Did Coach mention who he thought can maybe snowball into something that can catch fire? Not sure why we try to figure out stuff from his interviews. Don't try to figure it out because it isn't figured out yet. That's really what I tell you. It is and it isn't.

Really? What areas does he need to improve in before you deem that he is a good coach?

Ftr, HCDM was great on the MSG Varsity show a couple of months back. He really showed his personality and sense of humor. I have no idea why anyone would do an interview with Axe the blowhard.

We have another coach who is a crumudgeon with local media and a darling in national spotlight. Nothing new to us.

I'll give Marrone benefit of doubt that he is working 20 hours per day getting ready for season. Just win games, don't care whether he jokes with media or not.

In person, he's awesome. At fan fest last year, saw him stay on practice field until well after players left to sign every autograph. I know because my kids were last in line. My 4 year old asked how his knee was, he got a kick out of it and joked around with her at the end of a long night.

I've really got to see him in person b/c the pressers and interviews I see I'm massively underwhelmed -- not that it matters. He doesn't have to impress me. I'm just saying that I was listening to that interview and literally cringing at how bad those first two answers were to really, really benign questions.

But yeah, the guy is probably working his a$$ off and is preoccupied.

It's an Internet fan message board. What do you expect? The people that don't care about this stuff aren't posting on this site.

It can be argued that this should be a pre-req for a BCS-level coach nowadays (not that I, personally, need him to be).

I meant that as a compliment. You're not reserving any judgment at all? You're all in on him being an elite BCS level coach? I don't know, I think he's pretty good and has done a lot to right a ship that had been taking on water for years before bottoming out. I just simply meant to say most things look really good so far, but there are some minor concerns. Is that really that crazy a comment? You see DM's record/accomplishments so far as placing him beyond reproach?

I think you're really overreacting to my post. My point was just that I found it amusing in a pretty light-hearted way. I feel like I went out of my way to point out that he's probably a great guy and great in person and everything else. Whatever other compliments people want to send his way are fine with me. I honestly just thought it was amusing in the same way that the original BBC version of "The Office" was amusing -- some awkward silence and awkward interactions.

that was a very cordial give and take and it's clear they have a good relationship with no hidden meanings in any of it. Informative, straight forward honest answers. Based on that listen I'd say Marrone likes Axe and has no axe to grind with him. Marrones manner is just fine, more than personable enought. Just win baby, just win...

I absolutely agree the win part. I also don't think he has to be great with the media or a phenomenal interview. He really doesn't. I also don't think it's that unfair to say that his responses to those first two questions were palpably boring and uninformative and awkward.

But yes, just win. Win enough and I'll be posting things like "how dare they ask him about a clam bake?!?!?!?!?!?!? He's a football coach goddamnit!!!! What's wrong with that interviewer?!?!?!?!?"

I really like how Doug comes across in person. Real is the word that comes to mind.

Even in his prime Coac Mac was often indecipherable.

He was enthusiastic but he was hardly a source of substantive information - he usually talked about it being "beautiful thing."

Exactly. Everything was a beautiful thing...in public.

I used to go to a lot of practices back then. Mac would stand on that tower barking out commands. Swearing more than a drunken sailor and dropping bombs on everyone. Players, coaches, managers, even the stray dog. But after practice when faced with the media...everything was beautiful.

He knew how to play the game.
