On the post-game show it was speculated that Marshall could yet play in this tournament. I believe he fractured the scaphoid bone. My son broke this same bone and couldn't play baseball for 10 weeks. He had to be in a cast for 7 weeks. If it's the scaphoid I'd say Marshall is done for the year regardless that it's not his shooting hand. Fracturing the scaphoid is a nasty injury.

it is the scaphoid.

Assume the speculation was based on him continuing in the game after the injury occurred. CBS interviewed Roy and he gave very little information, certainly nothing that would fuel speculation in any direction.

Nah, Ernie Johnson and Kenny Smith were talking about Marshall playing through the injury next weekend. No way he is playing through that injury. He would be lucky to play in six weeks let alone six days.

Dad said hes having surgery tmw and may play friday, dont see how thats possible

I once played 2 hours of basketball not realizing I had fractured my scaphoid. Really didn't feel a thing while I was playing - but then it started throbbing that night. Not too much swelling either. Bone takes forever to heal because it doesn't get much blood circulation.

If I'm the Ohio coach I tell them to hack it any time he drives by with the ball, same with Henson.

They'll just give him one of those "football shots" they have in all the movies. He'll be fine.

Maybe he plays in final four? It looks like they are going to have a cakewalk getting there

He'd have a better chance of winning Powerball than he would of playing basketball five days after surgery.

It is his off hand... We played against a guy this season who didn't have an off hand, literally.

Baseball u NEED 2 hands, basketball u don't.

That isn't minimizing the injury in any way. I am no doctor, just pointing out that the off hand isn't as important as his legs or shooting wrist.

Not sure you understand the severity of this injury. Just google scaphoid fracture and you will see the recovery involves immobilization for at least six weeks. No way he plays in this tournament.

You do if you're a point guard

As a PG, not sure he could be effective if he can't dribble with either hand.

It's not just about pain. Playing through this injury could result in avasular necrosis and life long wrist pain/ dysfunction because the blood supply to this bone is tenuous ..if he plays...he's nuts

BPO--appreciate the perspective on this injury / recovery.

I'm no dr... So I prob am...

But if a safety or a lb'er can do it, I'd assume a Bball player could put it in a cast and play. It would certainly affect his play, but at least they didn't amputate his right leg. I'm just saying he COULD play.

As Steve Holt said, Marshall would risk very serious consequences if he didn't let the injury heal properly. I did a lot of research on this injury when it happened to my son and I can tell you it's a nasty little injury.

Guess you never saw Jim Abott play baseball.

How much does a PG use his wrist compared to a S or LB?

plus, I don't think they would let him play with a hard cast. and wouldn't the pain killers be a violation of the ncaa tournament drug policy.

Yeah avascular necrosis is a huge concern with this injury. Some injuries/breaks you can cast up and play through because won't get any worse, but this situation could get worse and should receive (prob surgery) and delicate healing or it could affect rest of his career and life. IMO playing would be pretty dumb.
