This guy is one great coach.
Campbell's background is OLine and run game.

Campbell replaced Paul Rhoades as HC in 2015 with 2016 his first season. He was previously HC at Toledo where he posted a 35-15 record over 4 years from 2012-2015. At 32 he was the youngest FBS head coaches.

Toledo was ranked 20th in 2015 and defeated Arkansas in the Military Bowl. Not surprisingly, he was in great demand but spurned all offers to take a 6-year $22.5 million contract at ISU.

ISU had not had a HC with a winning record in 38 years (Earle Bruce 36-32 1973-1978). Campbell now is 26-25 with signature wins over #3 Oklahoma, #4 TCU and now a win over Oklahoma at Ames for the first time in 60-years.

He has spurned NFL interest from the Jets and others.

Arguably, one of if not the best coaching job in college football. Nice to see.

I actually was thinking this same exact thing last night watching the game and was going to post about him. I remember when we were looking for guys. He was hired 7 days prior to Dino. I wanted this guy so bad. He was my number one choice and I was really upset when he went to Iowa State. (not saying much but Adam Gase was also one of the top 5 guys I wanted for the packers 2 years ago).

He is great, but at the time this board was less enthused for him than Dino. I stand by that enthusiasm as we needed a HC with an O background.

Between the two, there was no bad choice.

Ash would have been catastrophic.

He will be the next coach at Notre Dame or Michigan.

That or he could be enticed by NFL. Either way he's got a bright future. The MAC really produces tons of quality HC

I wanted Campbell over Dino Baber‘s, but why are you even posting this? The guy was on the hot seat two weeks ago when they got crushed by Louisiana Lafayette.

The next coach at Notre Dame or Michigan will be Luke Fickell out at Cincinnati.

And having absolutely nothing to do with this thread I see the great Mike Leach Lost this weekend, put up a whopping 14 points and barely 400 yards to mighty Arkansas

Campbell has done a good job and deserves recognition for that but I dont wish we had him. He is a young coach and he would have used us as a stepping stone. Dino is 20 years older and was less likely to leave for another job. I wish Campbell great success. He has a lot of years left to coach.

Campbell is definitely a good coach but they have a lot of What performances, usually early in the season. I liked him when we were looking for a new coach too, I think I had Brohm, Dino and Campbell as my top 3. Definitely didn’t have Ash in my top 3000

Man that texas defense has rutgers residue on it.

Also beat top ten West Virginia in 2018.

I think the board had a game thread back in 2015 for Toledo/Bowling Green cause a lot of us were hoping SU would hire Dino or Campbell.
Like Campbell, Dino has also gone to the 3-3-5 aggressive defense.

Yes, the old hindsight is 2020. Both were enticing and dinos stock was high but the O and tempo was just being unveiled nationwide by many coaches. Cant blame Coyle but having a young, innovative coach with a foundation of running game and OL is the better play. Sure though, his age played a factor too.

Good point, but Campbell using us as a stepping stone would be the ONLY negative in bringing him in .he has attention to detail, knows how to develop an oline, rbs, and his play calling is excellent and his players seem to really for him and play their nuts off.

We all knew he had a good background in the line. There is really no need to say "BUT" The decision was made 5 years ago. I liked Campbell just as much but was worried about his youth. I liked Dino better at the time because his vibrant personality, many years of experience and the ability to commit to SU long term due to his age.. Cant change my mind in what I thought SU needed at the time. lol I don't need to be sold on Campbell. I know what he does and wish him continued success.

He’s a phenomenal coach.

I won’t dig up the posts - but Campbell was a guy I was very high on then and even prior to, more so than Dino.

Regardless, doesn’t mean anything now. It’ll be fun to keep watching him. And it’ll be fun to keep. Herring for our guy(s) too.

What do you think of Billy Napier, then? His Lousiana-Lafayette team beat them like a drum in Ames in the opening game. Still sore about that one since I lost big money on it. +11 seemed like a gimme.

Need a few more years before I put him in the same class but he has certainly gotten off to a great start.

If he ended up coming to Syracuse, we would have have finished top 5 in the conference every year he was here. We have what, 1 top 5 win w Dino? Campbell has done quite a bit more with quite a bit less, with a program that in my estimation is one of the toughest jobs in the county. Not too mention he does it in a conference that chews up and spits out coaches (unless your name is Mike Gundy/Gary Patterson). If I were the AD of a blue blood program, him and Pj fleck would be on my very very shortlist of candidates, with maybe Napier emerging after a year or 2

I am waiting for him to win double digit games before I start putting him in the elite group. Fleck won 10 games in the Big10. 8 wins in a weak conference is good but it’s not enough to sell me on him getting a blue blood job.

Did we get Josh Wright?
Fleck = Kyle Lowry
Campbell = AJ Pryce

So true, ok, you said what I was thinking. Choosing coach is so important, probably the biggest decision in sports, right with NFL coaches. I posted last night the average height of his pass catchers:6'4". He establishes that run game and then they run play action to those big and fast recievers. ISU has been a secondary, maybe tertiary destination in the b12, but continues to recruit and bury us. Is ISU such a better destination? Dont think so. The athletes are out there, yet we fail on the OL and wr position.

Agreed, but in his defense will that ever happen in Ames?? Syracuse has so much more to offer-not only would he recruit more effectively but he can develop guys as well as anyone in the country. Plus give him Dungey for a few years?? Forget about it
