Matt Park: "Lord have Mercy!!!

I like Matt a lot, but he drives me crazy in football. He gives colorful descriptions of plays, but he does that and then gives the result almost as an afterthought. I have him on the radio with the TV sound down, (our posters are always complaining about the Tv announcers, so I don't think I'm missing much), and it kill me when he says somebody slipped a tackle on third and three and doesn't say if he gets the first down and I can see on Tv that he did. If I tried to just listen to Matt on the radio, I'd have little idea what was going on.
This matches my experience with Matt. I've only listened to him a couple times as I watched on tv because I couldn't believe he was as bad as the board indicated. As a radio announcer, he really needs to paint the picture for his listeners and his canvas definitely has some blank spots where we need more details. If you have tv to accompany his call, it's ok. But if you are solely depending on him for what's going on, it's not good at all.

Listening to him for the Georgetown game was painful, had no clue what was going on

Right? How hard is it to tell people what you see. He didn’t even say the Syracuse offense was on the field.

We’re a broadcasting school. There are 10 seniors at Newhouse who could do better.
There is a member of this board who can do the job!

But but but, he teaches some of the classes. He must be good.

Been beating this drum for awhile. I know it’s a job and it’s his, and I’m not one to throw stones because all jobs aren’t 100% what you see/hear, but he’s really bad at the publicly facing part of his that should be his bread and butter. The other stuff - on camera interviews for social media, coaches shows, whatever… none of that matters if you aren’t good at the basics of what you should be good at. I don’t really understand how he hasn’t been told to at least do better.

I've been wondering if something is going on.. he looks awful when he does his on camera stuff. I know he had that DUI years back but just in general he looks rough and disheveled these days. Clearly the quality of his work is a mess to go with.

Personal opinion is he has a problem but that’s a very big thing to say without evidence.

Right. Which is why I left it at he looks rough. No idea beyond that but it's hard not to notice if you've been around since he first started back in 03

He isn't good and that Learfield and the school keep him shows how little they care about this aspect.

By the way, this was a reference to what Matt said when Clark got called for unsportsmantlike conduct, thus effectively ending the game. He said "Lord of Mercy."

Duh, that's why I listed to WAER

On the subject of announcers, I thought that the ESPN PBP announcer (Wes Durham) definitely has a SU bias. I had assumed he was a Newhouse grad, but apparently he's just an ACC guy.

Also, while the importance of the missing SU players was discuused, maybe I missed it but I don't recall any mention of the recent departure of our OC and DC.

Wes is great.

He calls the game like a fan. And if you're listening in the car, it can be infuriating. You end up so confused.

Love Wes
Big ACC guy
Visited Cuse a few times when he was doing the Packer and Durham show. They both loved Dino and Wildhack.

SU game or not Wes does a great job. He’s fun to listen to. His big gig is as the PBP guy for the Atlanta Falcons.

I don’t know how the university can continue to employ him as the lead of the flagship broadcast.

It’s absolute embarrassing.

He had no idea who had the ball after the 12 men call.

Then actually verbally debated kicking deep versus onside.

Then just broke out in laughter after the Clark penalty call.

Listeners had no idea what was going on.

And I only listened to the final 2 min of the game. God knows what happened earlier.

It’s a disgrace.
Similar to John Sterling but at least Sterling's excuse is he's 80+ yrs old.
