I may be wrong, but I seem to remember that over the summer the discussion was that Benny would start either a 3 or a 4 and either Cole or Jimmy would play opposite. He's playing less than half the game, averaging 4.3 pts and 1.3rpg. It was mentioned that he would be 1-n-done and not be around for the incoming class. Can't see that. I thought I read that he started as a guard until he grew, but his shot is so flat, I wonder huh a guard.? He moves well, can jump out of gym but I don't see a 5 star player. So is he, as an old time former member would say, being "boeheimed"? Is he despite being 5☆, a late bloomer? Can I get intelligent responses.

Sure looks like he’s adjusting to the speed of the game. Some kids aren’t bothered by the transition, others are. His shot is flat, which may be mechanical, or simply being rushed. Only coaches know which it is because of what they’re seeing at practice.

I think he’s got the tools, just needs time.

His shot was flat in hs

He did have that one Jordan-like emphatic play. Or Jerami/Hakim-like (to Orange-ify things).

Watching Benny play reminds me of a young Hakim, but more skilled than Hak was as a true Freshman. Benny is very gifted athletically but needs time to develop before jumping to the next level. His shot mechanics likely need a year of off-season development before he ascends to a 1st round pick. It is challenging to significantly modify shot mechanics mid-season. Benny will improve a lot as the season goes on and he adjusts to the speed of the game as others have said.

Here was the scouting report on Benny that I posted in another thread from 247

Has positive length for a combo forward. Is thin, however, and needs to build up mass and strength. A high leaper with athleticism. Can struggle to utilize athleticism against contact and while in traffic. Has a great shooters touch. Finishes well on the move going to the basket. Is a reliable three-point shooter. Has potential to really extend his range. Not necessarily a nifty ball handler, but Williams is a reliable handler and can see the floor and distribute while on the move. Is a straight line driver who likes to utilize a crossover early in the drive. Has potential has a versatile defender and overall rebounder. Developing physical strength and toughness is vital.

Perhaps in a totally unusual occurrence, the Board overrated the immediate impact of one of our recruits.

I can't find them now, but I remember someone posting lists of the first year stats of the top 50 recruits over a 3 year period (a few years back). In general:

The Top 15 Recruits did fairly well in the first year, with a few flops.
But from 16-50, it was very much hit or miss. Many did OK in limited minutes. There was some that were very good right away, but it was very limited amount. Some did nothing.

I think this board generally usually aims too high in what it predicts / expects from frosh. Some hit, the majority do not. And its not unique - I suspect most fanbases do the exact same, especially those that are middling a bit.

Here is how the top 100 recruits (in RCSI composite) performed last year. (Note - the data seems to be off for a couple of players and links to other with the same name)

Not attaching any names just the core stats - PTS, REB, AST of the players ranked #20-#40 on the list. You can see 13 of the 20 players averaged less than 10 points a game.

It seems like everyone predicts our big name recruits are going to be 1 and done without seeing them play a minute of college ball. Some were predicting Jalen Carey would be one and done. He played like 5 minutes tonight vs. BC and almost did not record a stat.

Some were saying Matt Moyer was one and done. I’ve stopped even commenting ridiculous incoming freshman takes, they’re beyond ridiculous.

probably written by somebody who watched 5 minutes of his highlight reel and nothing else

And then you have guys like that Purdue center who is kicking butt and was ranked #440 coming out of HS and has bumped their stud center, who was on some 2nd or 3rd team AA teams, to the bench and only getting 17mpg.

Guys who are ranked where he was are typically better than advertised and a top 10/20 guy or they are 80-100 types.

Could just need experience and will be better at the end of the year regardless but our fans are idiots they way we hype recruits. If they have a couple decent games in November the sillyness really kicks up and the players tend to check out and listen to it thinking they are 1 and done guys.

I said from the beginning he wasn’t going to start and I got so many opinions on this. Other than about 5 freshman in the history of this program that are let totally loose by JB to play however they want, JB is a control freak with roster and not going to jeopardize certain things when it comes to playing a freshman over more experienced player...

He had a flat footed dunk last night that was unreal. Just kept rising
That was the one under the basket. Yeah, it was startling.

I don't think there's another guy on the team that can make that play in that way.

Maybe Frankie.
